Nasa telescopes capture image of galaxy resembling eye

The three telescopes were able to create the image of the galaxy NGC 4151 showing gas interacting with the growing black hole at its centre.

The white spot which looks like the eye?s pupil is the black hole and the red circumference is hydrogen.

The blue is created by X-rays which scientists are studying to understand how such black holes interact with the gas around them.

NGC 4151 is one of the nearest galaxies which contains an actively growing black hole.

It offers one of the best chances of studying the interaction between an active supermassive black hole and the surrounding gas of its host galaxy.

Wade a game-time decision for Heat vs. Wolves

(AP) ? Miami Heat star guard Dwyane Wade says he will wait until game time to see if his sore left foot will allow him to play against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Wade tested his foot with a thorough workout at the team's shootaround Friday morning. He tried jumping off it and landing on it on several drives to the basket to see if it was ready for the pounding of a game.

Wade says the foot is still a little sore and that he will wait to see how it feels in the evening before deciding whether to play.

For the Timberwolves, veteran guard J.J. Barea will miss the game with a strained right hamstring. Barea hopes to return Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks, his former team.

South Texas lost 13 troops to war in 2011

The San Antonio Express-News publishes a tribute each year to the military men and women from South Texas who died while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2011, 10 died in Afghanistan and three died in Iraq.

Jeff Ausborn

Air Force Maj. Jeff Ausborn's interests were his wife and five children, flying, and Alabama football.

Ausborn, a T-1 Jayhawk instructor pilot at Randolph AFB, called home every day while he was in Afghanistan to talk to his wife, Suzanna, a retired Air Force captain.

Ausborn, 41, was among nine Americans killed in Kabul on April 27, when an Afghan pilot opened fire on them during a meeting.

He was born and raised in Gadsden, Ala., where he first dreamed of becoming a fighter pilot. He was a computer science major at the University of Alabama, where he received a full scholarship.

Thomas Andrew Bohall

Army Sgt. Thomas Andrew Bohall was known to friends on the Reagan High School soccer team as ?The Rev? and ?Coach Bohall? because of the spirited exhortations he'd yell from the sidelines.

In 2005, after finishing first in his division in a marathon run in Kansas, Bohall was approached by a recruiter in Army special operations. He served twice in Iraq and was on his second tour of Afghanistan when he was killed May 26 by an explosive in Kandahar province.

Army officials said Bohall, 25, a member of the 101st Airborne Division, was in exceptional shape.

His survivors include his wife Jessica and young daughter.

John Felix Farias

Marine Lance Cpl. John Felix Farias used to work as a lifeguard at the Comal River for the city of New Braunfels, guarding tubers during the summer.

Farias, 20, was killed June 28 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while on combat operations.

Mourners lined the streets as his casket was carried in a motorcade through town. Many attended a memorial service at Canyon High School, where he played defensive end.

More than 1,000 people who attended his funeral heard longtime friend Chris Serna read a ?death letter? Farias had written, urging his parents, older sister and others to be happy and laugh often.

?And I will see all of you at the pearly gates,? the letter said.

Ira Benjamin Laningham IV

Army Pfc. Ira Benjamin Laningham IV of Zapata was the first South Texas soldier to die in the war in Afghanistan in 2011.

Laningham, 22, was killed in Logar Province on Jan. 7, when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

While attending Zapata High School, he played the trumpet and honored fallen soldiers by performing taps at military funerals.

He told his family he was going to be a lifer and had aspirations to become an Army Ranger.

Laningham married Stephanie Armendariz, also a soldier. He told her if anything happened to him not to cry, because he was doing something he loved.

Corey Owens

Relatives said that after Airman 1st Class Corey Owens graduated from the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen in 2003 he moved to San Antonio and fell in love with the city and the people.

Owens, 26, died Feb. 17 at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq of noncombat-related injuries, according to the Department of Defense. He enlisted in the Air Force in 2008 and trained to become an installation patrolman.

His family buried him at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery to be near his two daughters, who live in San Antonio with his ex-wife. He also is survived by his wife, Misty.

He considered his parents heroes.

Rodolfo Rodriguez

Sgt. Rodolfo Rodriguez Jr. of Pharr was on his first combat tour in Afghanistan, following three in Iraq, when insurgents in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, attacked his unit with a makeshift bomb.

He died of injuries sustained in the attack on Sept. 14, leaving behind a wife, Melissa, and two children. He was 26.

Rodriguez was remembered as a sincere and devoted leader who worked his men hard but wasn't afraid to joke around, carrying the same drive he'd shown as a star basketball player at Weslaco High School into his career in the military.

Benjamin Whetstone Schmidt

Marine Lance Cpl. Benjamin Whetstone Schmidt, a skilled marksman and scout sniper, got a standing ovation when he came home last year and appeared at an Alamo Heights football game.

Schmidt, 24, died on Oct. 6 in Afghanistan. His mother said the Marine Corps determined he was killed by ?friendly fire.?

The Alamo Heights High School graduate, a former defensive back for the Mules, had volunteered to return for a second tour of Afghanistan because he cared about his fellow Marines, friends and relatives said. One quote posted on his Facebook page was, ?Let there be songs to fill the air!?

Glenn Sewell

Family members remember there was no other job for Sgt. Glenn Sewell of Live Oak than serving his country as a soldier. He ?was guts and glory, he was all about being a soldier,? a cousin said.

Sewell, 23, was killed June 13, when a roadside bomb exploded near his armored vehicle in Wasit province in eastern Iraq.

A 2006 graduate of Judson High School, he played guitar and was known for his sense of humor.

He had served one tour in Afghanistan before he deployed to Iraq. His relatives said he was excited about returning to the war. He told his aunt, Pat Barrett, ?he needed to go back and help his friends.?

Omar Soltero

Gustavo Soltero said his son, Spec. Omar Soltero, always wanted to join the Army and ?fight the bad guys.?

Soltero, 28, died Jan. 31 after he was wounded during a roadside attack by insurgents in Wardak province in central Afghanistan.

He had enlisted about 10 years ago and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team

One of four children, Soltero sometimes talked to his father about the dangers he faced in Afghanistan, but he still wanted to be there. He never forgot his lineage and had a bicultural pride, his family said. But ?he loved his country,? Gustavo Soltero said. ?That's about all there is to say.?

Benjamin A. Stevenson

Master Sgt. Benjamin A. Stevenson, a Smithson Valley High School graduate, was on his 10th combat deployment when he died July 21 in Afghanistan after his unit came under attack in Paktika province.

A native of Albany, N.Y., Stevenson, 36, listed Canyon Lake as his home of record. He joined the Army in 1993 and passed his Special Forces qualification in 2000.

He served seven tours of Iraq and was on his third deployment to Afghanistan, assigned to the Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Stevenson, survived by his wife Heather and two young sons, was buried at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in North Carolina.

Steven Luna Talamantez

Sgt. Steven Luna Talamantez had helped build the Grand Hyatt downtown before he joined the Army and became an M1 Abrams tank crewman.

Talamantez, 34, was killed by indirect enemy fire in Maysan province on July 10, during his second tour of Iraq. The San Antonio native had a wife, Sandra, and two children.

At his funeral, Talamantez was eulogized as a class comedian among his troops, even though he possessed ?exceptional integrity,? Maj. Gen. David Rubenstein told mourners.

?He was always proud to be a soldier, and proud of his country and what it stands for,? Rubenstein said of Talamantez.

Charles J. Wren

Army Spc. Charles J. Wren, remembered as the ?Cheer Man? at Hondo High School, died of wounds suffered in an April 16 attack by insurgents in Nimroz province, Afghanistan.

Wren, 25, was one of three Fort Drum soldiers to die in the attack. He was survived by a wife, Klaryssa, and his two brothers.

Wren's home of record is Beeville, though he was born in Austin and spent most of his life in Hondo.

The ?Cheer Man? nickname came from his persona at pep rallies. But ?Chaz,? as many called him, also was remembered for bravery and strength amid hard knocks that included the loss of both of his parents.

Andres Zerme?o

1st Lt. Andres Zerme?o had shown promise as a boy growing up in the Rio Grande Valley. He attended the Science Academy of South Texas in Mercedes, and taught himself how to play the guitar.

After coming to San Antonio and earning a degree in psychology at St. Mary's University, he joined the Army and became known for tackling tough tasks and seeing them through.

On Sept. 25, about a month before his first tour of Afghanistan was to end, Zerme?o, 26, was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade in Wardak province. He was survived by his wife Rachel and two young children.

He was buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Staff writers Scott Huddleston, Vincent T. Davis and Lynn Brezosky contributed to this report.

Panthers QB Newton not upset about Pro Bowl snub (AP)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Despite a record-setting rookie season, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was not selected to the Pro Bowl.

He certainly isn't pouting over it.

"Who am I to be mad at the fact that I'm the first alternate?" Newton said with a wide smile Wednesday.

Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Eli Manning were selected over Newton, even though Manning has seven fewer total touchdowns.

Newton says he was "honored" to be selected as a first alternate and knows there's a good chance he might wind up replacing one of the guys ahead of him if he pulls out of the game or if the Packers, Saints or Giants wind up in the Super Bowl, which is now played one week after the Pro Bowl.

"Those three guys are at the peak of their game," Newton said.

Still, Panthers coach Ron Rivera believes Newton deserved to go, citing the rookie's ability to make plays with his feet. Newton has thrown for 20 touchdowns and run for 14, the most ever by a quarterback.

By comparison, Manning has 27 total touchdowns ? 26 passing and one rushing.

Manning, however, has more yards passing (4,587) than Newton (3,893) and has a slightly higher quarterback rating.

Both have 16 interceptions.

"I'm disappointed," Rivera said. "He's first alternate, but still. People talk about the numbers weren't as good as some of the other guys. But I disagree because of the combined numbers ? not just throwing the ball, but running the ball."

The Panthers have led in 14 of 15 games this season, but are just 6-9 because they've struggled to close out games in the fourth quarter.

Manning's Giants will face the Cowboys this Sunday for the NFC East division title.

All things considered, Newton has had a remarkable season for the Panthers and is one of the top candidates for NFL Rookie of the Year.

He's already broken Peyton Manning's rookie record for yards passing in a season and has shattered Steve Grogan's 35-year-old record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

This week against the Saints he needs 107 yards to become the first quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards and run for 500 in the same season.

Saints coach Sean Payton wouldn't divulge who he voted for in the Pro Bowl, but said Newton has been impressive. He also believes Newton will end up playing in the game one way or the other.

"He's going to have a ton of opportunities to play in the Pro Bowl," Payton said of Newton. "To be a rookie with no offseason and literally no minicamp and to report to training camp and do what he's done is amazing. ... He's a guy that I see in that game. Unfortunately he's also in our division."

Payton said he was impressed with Newton the first time he saw him in a uniform.

"I remember being out at midfield the last time we played and seeing his stature and size and arm strength," Payton said. "He's got that warm smile that's contagious to playing quarterback in this league and I think that (confidence) exudes over to his team."

When asked if he's exceeded his own expectations this year, Newton said, "I'm all about how team success plays out and our record is not where we want to be. My goal before this year was to make it to the playoffs. We had ample opportunities to make that happen and I think we dropped the ball on that."

Center Ryan Kalil, who will represent the Panthers at the Pro Bowl along with receiver Steve Smith, said he expects Newton will be making plenty of trips to Hawaii in the future.

"I think he has the respect of a lot of guys around the league and let's face it, there's nothing wrong with being a first alternate either, especially against the quarterbacks he has to compete against," Kalil said. "But he's had a heck of a season, especially as a rookie who didn't have an offseason that a guy normally would have because of the lockout."

Kalil said he's seen Newton mature as a leader both on and off the field.

"We can't be more excited about having him for the future," Kalil said.

Newton is excited, too.

"The one thing we have made a big stride in is creating that hope and a buzz in the community of Charlotte," Newton said. "You can see the fan support everywhere and to some degree we've succeeded in that level."

Debt advice for anyone concerned about unemployment

The Debt Advisory Centre is reminding everyone to do what they can to protect themselves against financial hardship in the event that they're made redundant, after it was revealed by the Office for National Statistics that unemployment has hit a 20-year high and that there are currently over 1 million young people unemployed.

Some of those people may be able to rely on savings, but some may find they need to borrow money to get by. If you're in work at the moment - are you prepared for what might happen if you lost your job?

Growth forecasts predict that the economy will only grow by about 1% over 2012. Also, it's predicted by some experts that unemployment will rise further this year and the next. Sir Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, has said that growth over the next few quarters would be "markedly weaker" than previously thought.

Unemployment can easily lead to debt. The debt charity the Money Advice Service has said that one in eight of the people who became unemployed in the third quarter of this year will have severe debt problems as a result.

A spokesperson for the Debt Advisory Centre commented: "If you are employed at the moment, consider whether you are doing enough to protect yourself financially if you lost your job. It is certainly worth putting whatever you can afford into savings every month. Even ?50 a month (just ?12.50 per week) would grow into a substantial pot of ?600 after only 12 months.

"If you're worried about your job security but can't afford to save at the moment because of debt payments, it's particularly important to get those debts paid off. If you can't even afford those debt payments, you may be able to lower your monthly payments with one of the many debt solutions that are available to people in debt. A professional debt advisor will be able to tell you about the various ways out of debt.

"If you are unemployed, do what you can to avoid borrowing. If you have savings to fall back on, so much the better; even so, you may find it impossible to maintain the same standard of living as when you were working. Addressing your spending and living within your means will help you to cope with unemployment and avoid unnecessary borrowing while you're out of work.

"Finally, make sure you are receiving all the benefits and tax credits you are entitled to while you're not working, although this isn't likely to be a great amount. While you're out of work, draw up a new budget taking account of your present income and try to make sure your expenses remain less than your income. Things may be difficult for a while, but unemployment is usually temporary, so focus on your goal of finding a new job, or retraining."

Oil hovers above $101 amid rising Iran tensions

SINGAPORE --?

Oil prices hovered above $101 a barrel amid investor concern that rising Middle East tensions could disrupt crude supplies.

Benchmark crude for February delivery fell 12 cents to $101.22 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.66 to settle at $101.34 in New York on Tuesday.

In London, Brent crude was up 4 cents at $109.31 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Iran's official news agency IRNA reported Tuesday that Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi said his country will close the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off oil exports, if Western nations impose sanctions on Iran's oil shipments.

The U.S., the U.K. and other nations are mulling more sanctions against Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, over concern about its nuclear power program.

The Strait of Hormuz, the choke point of the Persian Gulf, is one of the world's busiest routes for crude shipments with about a sixth of the world's oil production passing through.

If tankers could not use the strait, they would have to take longer, more expensive routes to their destinations, which would likely boost prices.

"We doubt political posturing will turn into action, but oil remains above $100 regardless," energy consultant and trader The Schork Group said in a report.

Schork estimates crude would jump to above $140 if Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz.

Signs the U.S. economy is improving also helped bolster crude. The New York-based Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index jumped almost 10 points from November, to 64.5, the highest since April.

The National Retail Federation said it expects a 3.8 percent increase in Christmas holiday sales, up from its forecast of 2.8 percent in September.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil fell 0.4 cent to $2.91 per gallon and gasoline futures slid 0.6 cent at $2.68 per gallon. Natural gas was down 0.7 cent to $3.11 per 1,000 cubic feet.

December's Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight (SPACE.com)

The Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight (Dec. 13), but interested skywatchers might have to battle chilly temperatures and bright moonlight.

The annual Geminids shower is usually one of the most spectacular light shows of the year, but this time around, the vivid and nearly full moon is threatening to take center stage instead.

On Dec. 10, lunar observers were treated to a stunning total lunar eclipse, and the moon's dazzling light in the night sky is expected to make it difficult to spot Geminids as the shower reaches its peak tonight.

"This year, folks will get a nice double whammy with the lunar eclipse on the 10th, and then the Geminid peak on the night of the 13th, but it would be nice if we could just turn off the moon after the eclipse," Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsvilla, Ala., told SPACE.com.

December's light show

The annual Geminid meteor shower has become known as one of the most impressive of the year, sometimes even eclipsing the more famous Perseid meteor shower that occurs every August.

"It's a relatively young meteor shower," Cooke said. "It didn't really turn on until the 1830s, and it may have been first seen from a Mississippi river boat back then. But they've been gradually increasing in strength over the years, and now they're the strongest meteor shower of the year." [Most Amazing Leonid?Meteor Shower?Photos]

The Geminids shower also features slow and bright meteors, with some of them appearing yellowish in color, said astronomer Joe Rao, SPACE.com's skywatching columnist. On a clear night, skywatchers have reported seeing up to 120 meteors per hour during the peak of the Geminids in previous years.

This year, however, skywatchers will likely see about half that rate, Cooke said.

"There will probably be around 40 or 50 per hour on the night of the 13th," he said. "Unlike the Perseids, it will be really cold, so folks need to remember to dress warm. The Geminids are noted for bright meteors, and there can be a lot of them. The shower is probably the best meteor shower to watch when the moon isn't getting in the way. So, if you can brave the cold, the Geminids will not disappoint, in general."

Lighting up the night sky

Occasionally, the Geminids can produce stunning fireballs, and if that happens this year, they should be bright enough to see even with the moonlight.

Meteors are often referred to as "shooting stars," but these streaks of light actually come from pieces of debris that hit Earth's atmosphere and burn up. Larger pieces that dive through the atmosphere can cause unusually bright meteors, which are called fireballs.

Most meteor showers are the remnants of comets, but the Geminids are a little different. The source of these meteors is a strange asteroid called 3200 Phaethon, which sheds bits of dusty debris.

This space rock orbits closer to the sun than any other known asteroid, coming well inside Mercury's orbit. This behavior makes 3200 Phaethon more like a comet than an asteroid, astronomers have said, but it the object has never exhibited any other features that would classify it as a comet, such as a coma, gas jets or a tail.

The Geminid meteor shower gets its name from the constellation Gemini, since the meteors appear to radiate from this point in the sky. When we look toward this spot, we are actually looking into the line of 3200 Phaethon's orbit, scientists have said.

While this year's Geminid meteor shower may be more subdued, next year's light shows are already showing more promise. The Quadrantids will be the next major meteor shower; skywatchers can expect these to peak on the night of Jan. 3, 2012.

The rest of the 2012 meteor shower lineup looks to be more impressive, with moonlight becoming less of a factor as the year progresses, Cooke said.

"Next year will be a better year for meteor showers, as far as moonlight is concerned," he said.

Editor's Note: If you do happen to catch a photo of the Geminids this year, and would like to share it for a possible story or gallery on SPACE.com, please email managing editor Tariq Malik at tmalik@space.com.

Andrew Stanton Reveals Reasons for John Carter Name Change

Did you know that marketing decisions can be condescending and sexist?? It?s true! (and those two qualities usually go hand-in-hand so you shouldn?t be surprised)? I?ve been puzzled as to why Disney changed the title of John Carter to John Carter of Mars.? To me, ?of Mars? is the hook.? John Carter is ?Some Guy? particular because of his generic name.? If his name was ?Captain Billyboots Spaceship? then I can see dropping the ?of Mars?.? So why did half the title disappear?

Director Andrew Stanton recently told BleedingCool that the title had already been changed from A Princess of Mars because it was a ?truth? that boys wouldn?t go see it if they kept author Edgar Rice Burroughs? original title. But then, when they changed it to John Carter of Mars, Stanton believed it was also a ?truth? that girls wouldn?t see it because apparently girls hate planets.? So the compromise was to make it John Carter and now no one will see it.? Hit the jump for more from Stanton and my thoughts on this idiotic decision.

john-carter-posterIt?s the word ?truth? from Stanton that bothers me on this decision.? He says the title John Carter works because ?It?s about a guy becoming John Carter. So I?m not misrepresenting what this movie is, it?s John Carter.?? Whoopity-doo.? It tells no one anything about the movie.? Also, his name is already ?John Carter? when the story begins.? Guess where goes?? Again, ?of Mars? is the hook, and it?s condescending to both boys and girls to change the title because some market research says you?ll alienate one gender.? Also, half of an audience is better than no audience at all.

Stanton also believes he can change the way movies are made, and apparently that way is making it like a Pixar movie.? But live-action doesn?t work that way, it?s a completely different system, and Stanton?s experiment has cost Disney a budget rumored to be $400 ? $500 million.? Stanton tells BleedingCool he finds no embarrassment in asking for more reshoots.? He explains why he believes that?s the right way to go about it:

It?s like me saying to you, you can all go and write a piece about what we talked about today, but you only get to write it once. You don?t get to change a word once it?s set down. And that?s how movies are made, and it?s fucked up. It should be that you should somehow be able to balance economics and let the artist be an artist, and not be afraid of failure or trial and error.

Even if Stanton has managed to make a great movie out of this process, Disney may have no idea on how to sell it, which is why you have a bland title instead of one that tells people why they should see the movie.? Watch the new trailer and see if you?re more excited to see the flick:

AP Interview: Iraq PM confident in post-US future (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Weeks before the U.S. pullout, Iraq's prime minister confidently predicted Saturday that his country will achieve stability and remain independent of its giant neighbor Iran even without an American troop presence.

Nouri al-Maliki also warned of civil war in Iran's ally Syria if Bashar Assad falls ? a view that puts him closer to Tehran's position and at odds with Washington. The foreign policy pronouncement indicates that Iraq is emerging from the shadows of U.S. influence in a way unforeseen when U.S.-led forces invaded eight years ago to topple Saddam Hussein.

"The situation in Syria is dangerous," al-Maliki told The Associated Press during an interview at his office in a former Saddam-era palace in Baghdad's Green Zone. "Things should be dealt with appropriately so that the spring in Syria does not turn into a winter."

The Obama administration has been outspoken in its criticism of Assad's bloody crackdown on protests that the U.N. says has killed more than 4,000 people so far, the bloodiest in a wave of uprisings that have been dubbed the Arab Spring.

Iraq has been much more circumspect and abstained from key Arab League votes suspending Syria's membership and imposing sanctions on the country. That has raised concern that Baghdad is succumbing to Iranian pressure to protect Assad's regime. Tehran is Syria's main backer.

Al-Maliki insisted that Iraq will chart its own policies in the future according to national interests, not the dictates of Iran or any other country.

Some U.S. officials have suggested that Iranian influence in Iraq would inevitably grow once American troops depart.

Both countries have Shiite majorities and are dominated by Shiite political groups. Many Iraqi politicians spent time in exile in Iran under Saddam's repressive regime, and one of al-Maliki's main allies ? anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr ? is believed to spend most of his time in Iran.

"Iraq is not a follower of any country," al-Maliki said. He pointed out several areas in which Iraq had acted against Iran's desires, including the signing of the security agreement in 2008 that required all U.S. forces to leave Iraq by the end of this year. Iran had been pushing for all American troops to be out of the country even sooner.

"Through our policies, Iraq was not and will not be a follower of another country's policies," he said.

But he also took pains to emphasize that Iraq did want to maintain good relations with Iran as the two countries share extensive cultural, economical and religious ties.

"Clearly, we are no enemy to Iran and we do not accept that some who have problems with Iran would use us as a battlefield. Some want to fight Iran with Iraqi resources as has happened in the past. We do not allow Iran to use us against others that Iran has problems with, and we do not allow others to use us against Iran," he said.

The prime minister defended his country's stance when it comes to how to address the instability roiling neighboring Syria right now.

The U.N.'s top human rights official said this week that Syria is in a state of civil war and that more than 4,000 people have been killed since March.

Al-Maliki said Iraq believes the Syrian people's rights should be protected and that his government has told the Syrian regime that the age of one party and one sect running the country is over. Syria is ruled by a minority Alawite regime, an offshoot of Shiism, that rules over a Sunni Muslim majority.

The Iraqi prime minister even said that members of the Syrian opposition had recently asked to come to Iraq, and that his government would meet with them. But he distanced himself from calls for Assad's ouster, warning that could plunge the country into civil war.

"The killing or removal of President Bashar in any way will explode into an internal struggle between two groups and this will have an impact on the region," al-Maliki said.

"My opinion ? I also lived in Syria for more than 16 years ? is that it will end with civil war and this civil war will lead to alliances in the region. Because we are a country that suffered from the civil war of a sectarian background, we fear for the future of Syria and the whole region," he said.

Al-Maliki also insisted his forces were ready to take over security during a wide-ranging discussion on where his country stands ahead of the Dec. 31 departure of all American troops.

"Nothing has changed with the withdrawal of the American forces from Iraq on the security level because basically it has been in our hands," he said.

The U.S. withdrawal has occurred in stages, with the American military pulling out of the cities in 2008, leaving the soldiers largely confined to bases as Iraqi security forces took the lead. About 13,000 U.S. troops are still in the country, down from a one-time high of about 170,000.

Al-Maliki said he was grateful to the United States for overthrowing Saddam.

"We appreciate that, no doubt," the prime minister said, adding he was not worried about a resumption of the type of sectarian warfare that pushed his own country to the brink of civil war in the years following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

On the contrary, he said violence would decline because the Americans' departure would remove one of the main reasons for attacks.

"What was taking place during the presence of the American forces will decrease in the period after the withdrawal," he said. "Some people find a pretext in the presence of the American forces to justify their acts, but now what justification will they come up with?"

Trump blasts Paul for smacking him in forum-skip (Politico)

Donald Trump apparently didn't take kindly to Ron Paul's decision to skip the NewsMax-hosted forum moderated by the developer and reality TV star, saying it created a circus-like atmosphere around the presidential race.

"As I said in the past and will reiterate again, Ron Paul has a zero chance of winning either the nomination or the presidency," Trump said in a statement in response to Paul, adding, "my poll numbers were substantially higher than any of his poll numbers, at any time."

"Few people take Ron Paul seriously and many of his views and presentation make him a clown-like candidate," he said. "I am glad he and Jon Huntsman, who has inconsequential poll numbers or a chance of winning, will not be attending the debate and wasting the time of the viewers who are trying very hard to make a very important decision."

Trump referred to his book that's coming out and his claim he is worth more than $7 billion, and asked why he is "not the right person to lead this country out of economic chaos or at least to moderate a debate. I would like to see how Ron Paul would fair in the world of big business."

Paul was the first candidate competing in Iowa to reject the invitation for the Dec. 27 event. His move may give cover to other candidates to do the same - although Trump's comments are a reminder of the potential problem with skipping it.

Seahawks Crush Eagles 31-14: Marshawn Lynch Lifts Seattle Over Philadelphia

SEATTLE ? Marshawn Lynch loves the prime-time stage, even if he's rarely given such a spotlight.

Seattle's hard-charging running back bulled through Philadelphia for 148 yards and a pair of first-half touchdowns, David Hawthorne returned the third of Vince Young's four interceptions 77 yards for a score, and the Seahawks rolled to a 31-14 victory Thursday night that only added to the Eagles' miserable season.

Lynch ran into and escaped from a massive pileup for a 15-yard TD run in the first quarter, then made a quick cut and went back against the flow for a 40-yard scoring dash on the first play of the second quarter to give the Seahawks (5-7) a 14-0 lead.

Golden Tate's 11-yard, toe-tapping touchdown grab along the back edge of the end zone in the third quarter pushed Seattle's cushion to 17 over the Eagles (4-8).

But the Seahawks' third victory in their last four games wasn't secured until Hawthorne stepped in front of a swing pass intended for LeSean McCoy and raced untouched in the other direction with 4:24 left.

Making his third straight start in place of Michael Vick and his two broken ribs, Young couldn't find the same magic he did in the 2006 Rose Bowl when he led Texas to an upset of Pete Carroll and USC.

Young's first pass of the night was an awful interception thrown right to Seattle safety Kam Chancellor and nowhere near an Eagles receiver. Young was intercepted in the third quarter as well when a perfect pass deflected off the hands of Riley Cooper and into the hands of cornerback Brandon Browner. Both turnovers led to Seattle touchdowns.

Then came a pass for McCoy when Young clearly didn't see Hawthorne, ruining the Eagles' last chance to rally. For good measure, Young added one more interception in the final moments, giving him a career-high four picks.

Young finished 17 of 29 for 208 yards. McCoy got more chances than he did last Sunday against New England when he touched the ball just 14 times, a number that drew criticism from Eagles fans believing the leading rusher in the NFL deserved more opportunities.

McCoy finished with 84 yards on 17 carries and added another four catches for 49 yards. But he was upstaged by Lynch.

For the fourth time in five games, Lynch topped 100 yards ? and the one time he didn't, he finished with 88 yards in a victory over St. Louis. He had 90 yards by halftime on Thursday night, the most first-half yards rushing in his career. He averaged 6.7 yards per carry and almost immediately provided a spark the Seahawks needed on a short week.

And he did it while battling an upset stomach that occasionally forced him to the sideline.

Following Young's first interception, Seattle got down to the Eagles 10 on a 26-yard third-down completion from quarterback Tarvaris Jackson to Ben Obomanu. A penalty backed Seattle up 5 yards, but that only provided Lynch more room for theatrics.

On first-and-goal at the 15, he ran into a massive crowd near the 10. He got lost in the pile, wiggled out of the arms of linebacker Jamar Chaney and suddenly burst into the end zone, a run that was reminiscent of his 67-yard, tackle-breaking touchdown gallop in the playoffs last season against New Orleans.

Lynch's second touchdown was an opportunity for him to show off his open-field speed, and it came after another important third-down conversion, this time a 21-yard pass from Jackson to rookie Doug Baldwin on third-and-7. On the next snap, the flow of the play went to Lynch's left, but he immediately cut back right and found open field, beating the Eagles defense to the corner and going 40 yards untouched.

It was the second-most yards rushing in Lynch's career, behind the 153 he had in his rookie season with Buffalo against Cincinnati.

Tate's second straight game with a touchdown grab seemed to wrap up the victory. Tate outdueled a double-team at the back of the end zone and hauled in the toss from Jackson to give Seattle a 24-7 lead. Jackson finished 13 of 16 for 190 yards and a touchdown.

But the quick bounce-back by the Seahawks only magnified their missed chance last Sunday when they blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead and lost 23-17 to Washington. Even with the win over Philadelphia and another home game coming up against St. Louis, any hopes the Seahawks have of jumping into the playoff race are likely gone.

Meanwhile, the misery only continued for Philadelphia. The Eagles played without QB Michael Vick, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and WR Jeremy Maclin, then lost CB Nnamdi Asomugha to a neck/head injury late in the first half.

Still, Philadelphia pulled within 24-14 early in the fourth quarter when Young led a 17-play, 80-yard drive that ate up more than 10 minutes of the clock. The drive included a fourth-down conversion inside the Seahawks 10 and was capped on a 2-yard shovel pass from Young to McCoy.

Young then drove the Eagles inside the Seattle 35 on their next possession with a chance to make it a one-score game, but failed to see Hawthorne lurking in the flat.

Sierra Leone Gola Rainforest becomes national park (AP)

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone ? Sierra Leone's president is officially declaring the Gola Rainforest a national park.

A statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security says that the Gola Rainforest has been identified as a "Biodiversity hotspot" and is of global importance because of its rich variety of plants and animals.

It said President Ernest Bai Koroma is making the declaration Saturday as part of a government action plan that recommends creating a national network of protected areas for terrestrial and wetland ecosystems across the country.

The Gola Rainforest National Park lies in the countries southeast at the border with Liberia.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds says the declaration of the over 71,000-hectare Gola Rainforest as a national park should subdue ongoing threats from logging and mining.

Strange new 'species' of ultra-red galaxy discovered

Strange new 'species' of ultra-red galaxy discovered [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 1-Dec-2011

Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

In the distant reaches of the universe, almost 13 billion light-years from Earth, a strange species of galaxy lay hidden. Cloaked in dust and dimmed by the intervening distance, even the Hubble Space Telescope couldn't spy it. It took the revealing power of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope to uncover not one, but four remarkably red galaxies. And while astronomers can describe the members of this new "species," they can't explain what makes them so ruddy.

"We've had to go to extremes to get the models to match our observations," said Jiasheng Huang of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). Huang is lead author on the paper announcing the find, which was published online by the Astrophysical Journal.

Spitzer succeeded where Hubble failed because Spitzer is sensitive to infrared light - light so red that it lies beyond the visible part of the spectrum. The newfound galaxies are more than 60 times brighter in the infrared than they are at the reddest colors Hubble can detect.

Galaxies can be very red for several reasons. They might be very dusty. They might contain many old, red stars. Or they might be very distant, in which case the expansion of the universe stretches their light to longer wavelengths and hence redder colors (a process known as redshifting). All three reasons seem to apply to the newfound galaxies.

All four galaxies are grouped near each other and appear to be physically associated, rather than being a chance line-up. Due to their great distance, we see them as they were only a billion years after the Big Bang - an era when the first galaxies formed.

"Hubble has shown us some of the first protogalaxies that formed, but nothing that looks like this. In a sense, these galaxies might be a 'missing link' in galactic evolution" said co-author Giovanni Fazio of the CfA.

Next, researchers hope to measure an accurate redshift for the galaxies, which will require more powerful instruments like the Large Millimeter Telescope or Atacama Large Millimeter Array. They also plan to search for more examples of this new "species" of extremely red galaxies.

"There's evidence for others in other regions of the sky. We'll analyze more Spitzer and Hubble observations to track them down," said Fazio.

(AP) ? Country singer Mindy McCready said Thursday she would not bring her 5-year-old son back from Tennessee to Florida, despite violating a custody arrangement and a judge's order.

McCready took the boy during a recent visit at her father's Florida home, and a judge signed an order Thursday ordering authorities to take the boy into custody and return him. It's not yet clear whether the singer could face criminal charges.

"I'm doing all this to protect Zander, not stay out of trouble," McCready wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Thursday. "I don't think I should be in trouble for protecting my son in the first place."

McCready says she is in Tennessee and cannot travel because she's nearly seven months pregnant with twins.

The judge's order means law enforcement anywhere can pick up the boy and bring him back to Florida.

McCready and her mother have had a long custody battle over the boy. Until recently, the boy was living with McCready's mother. Her mother was awarded guardianship in 2007. McCready says her son has suffered abuse at her mother's house; her mother, Gayle Inge, denies the abuse allegations.

"Once the child is located, we will pick him up and bring him back to Florida," said Terri Durdaller, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Children and Families. "Although these circumstances are unfortunate for a young child, his safety and well-being are our number one priority."

McCready provided a series of emails to the AP with Lee County Judge James Seals' ruling to return the boy.

"Mom has violated the court's custody order and we are simply restoring the child back into our custody," the judge wrote. "Nothing more. Nothing less. The court makes no judgment about whether Mom will or will not competently care for the child while in her custody. It only wants the child back where the court placed him."

McCready found fame in the mid-1990s and has lived a complicated life in recent years.

In August, she filed a libel suit against her mother and the National Enquirer's parent company, American Media Inc., over a story published in the tabloid newspaper that quoted Inge.

And in 2008, McCready was admitted to a hospital after police said she cut her wrists and took several pills in a suicide attempt.

During the TV show "Celebrity Rehab 3" in 2010, McCready came off as a sympathetic figure, and host Dr. Drew Pinsky called her an angel in the season finale.

Syria violence surges as UN calls for protection (AP)

BEIRUT ? The United Nations' human rights chief called on the international community to protect Syrian civilians Friday as violence surged across the country, with hours of intense shooting that sent stray bullets whizzing across the border.

The new bloodshed came as activists reported a grim milestone in the 8-month-old revolt: November was the deadliest month of the uprising, with at least 950 people killed in gunbattles, raids and other violence as protesters demand the ouster of President Bashar Assad.

The U.N. estimates more than 4,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in the middle of March, inspired by the Arab Spring revolutions sweeping the Middle East.

"In light of the manifest failure of the Syrian authorities to protect their citizens, the international community needs to take urgent and effective measures to protect the Syrian people," Navi Pillay, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Pillay on Thursday characterized the conflict in Syria as a civil war.

International intervention, such as the NATO action in Libya that helped topple Moammar Gadhafi, is all but out of the question in Syria. But the European Union, the Arab League, Turkey and others have piled on sanctions aimed at crippling the regime once and for all.

The EU's latest sanctions, which were announced Thursday, target 12 people and 11 companies with travel bans and asset freezes. They add to a long list of regime figures previously sanctioned by the EU, including Assad himself and high-ranking security officials.

The identities of those on the new list were made public Friday in the EU's official journal. They include the ministers of finance and the economy, as well as army officers.

Also on the list are the pro-government Cham Press TV and Al-Watan newspaper, as well as a research center that the EU says provides support to the Syrian military in acquiring equipment for the surveillance of demonstrators.

Three oil companies, which the EU statement said provide financial support to the regime, were also listed. They include the Syria Trading Oil Company, which is responsible for Syria's oil exports.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC also said Friday it will halt its operations in Syria to comply with the penalties.

The economic sanctions will limit the regime's access to cash at a time when Assad is relying more than ever on the support of the business classes.

Assad has spent years shifting the country away from the socialism espoused by his father, which helped boost a new and vibrant merchant class that transformed Syria's economic landscape ? even as the regime's political trappings remained unchanged.

So far, the monied classes have clung to the sidelines, but if the economic squeeze reaches them, it could be a game-changer for the regime.

Despite Friday's diplomatic squeeze, violence continued.

The most serious violence appears to have occurred in the Syrian town of Talkalakh, where witnesses reported more than six hours of explosions and gunfire starting at 3 a.m.

"We were hearing strong explosions and the crack of heavy machine-gun fire," Ahmad al-Fahel, who lives on the Lebanese side of the border, told The Associated Press by telephone. "It sounded as if they were destroying the city."

The town is within walking distance from Lebanon, and at least two people were struck by bullets on the Lebanese side. They included an 11-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man, Lebanese security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

There was no immediate word on casualties in Talkalakh. But deadly violence was reported elsewhere in Syria, in Homs and Idlib provinces. At least nine people were killed nationwide, according to the Local Coordination Committees, which is a coalition of Syrian activists groups.

The reports of violence, and the activist groups' death toll for November, could not be independently confirmed. The regime has sealed the country off from foreign journalists and prevented independent reporting.

Assad is depending on the strong support of Russia and China to withstand the sanctions and growing worldwide isolation.

Russia and China have vetoed a Western-backed U.N. Security Council resolution condemning the bloodshed in Syria, arguing that NATO misused a previous U.N. mandate authorizing use of force in Libya.

On Friday, Russia's Ambassador Valery Loshchinin, whose nation has sold arms to Syria, said opposition groups are being armed and organized from abroad.

He echoed the Syrian government's argument that foreign powers looking to destabilize Syria are behind the unrest ? not true protesters seeking more freedom and the end to dictatorship.

"Now, we hear, unfortunately, that the conflict in Syria continues to be fueled by outside forces who are interested in further destabilizing the situation," Loshchinin told the emergency meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council.

"Armed terrorist and extremist groups are being armed and organized, supplied with weapons and money from abroad," he said. "The situation in Syria must be resolved in strict observance of international law and the provisions of the United Nations Charter."

But U.S. Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe accused the regime itself of stoking the conflict "with propaganda about foreign conspiracies and domestic terrorism."

"The propaganda is fooling no one," Donahoe said. "The regime is driving the cycle of violence and sectarianism."

The 47-nation rights council passed a resolution backed by 37 African, European, Asian, Arab and American members chiding Syria for "gross and systematic violations of human rights."

Russia and China were among four countries to vote against the motion.

The resolution also established the post of a special human rights investigator to investigate abuses in Syria.

Cross-referencing makes finding the recipe you're looking for a breeze, even if you don't remember what it's called. And cooking multiple recipes at once is made much easier by a feature that lets you dim ingredients as you add them, so you can be sure that the soup and cookies both have the right amount of ginger. You can share recipes via email and back up your collection through iTunes file sharing.

kmg 300 big fork little fork6. Big Fork Little Fork

There are video how-to's and educational games to teach kids cooking skills like how to crack an egg or measure correctly, in addition to recipe videos that kids can follow along with and cook a whole meal. "Dinnertime 911" includes conversation starters to get the family talking around the dinner table.

The most versatile tool in your kitchen
The iPad's unique capabilities as a touchscreen tablet that's larger than a smartphone but smaller and more portable than a laptop make it immensely suited to using in the kitchen. You don't have to spend a lot of money on cooking apps; Epicurious is at the top of so many lists for a very good reason, and it's free! If you're still struggling with getting eggs properly hard boiled, spending $15.99 on a cooking app like Big Oven might not make a lot of sense for you. If, on the other hand, you want to impress your fianc?e (or your fianc?e's mother) with your culinary know-how, $9.99 for How To Cook Everything might seem like a steal.

Either way, these apps will help you get the most out of your cooking technology ? just be sure not to bake your iPad!
