Understand the role of White Balance in Digital Cameras
White balance is central to photography. It is the way in which the camera captures colors as they are. In theory when you white balance a picture, you essentially ensure that the white in real looks as white in the picture too. What this does is that it enables the digital cameras sensors to interpret other colors correctly. However this is easier said than done. There are various shades of white, some cooler (which render a bluer tint) and others warmer (which render a yellowish tint) that can confuse the camera and you may end up capturing altered colors.
To counter this, modern digital cameras come loaded with White Balance presets most noteworthy of which is the Auto White Balance mode. It is also by far the most commonly used White Balance preset by default. Auto White Balance in digital cameras tries to average out the color temperatures and thus capture an average color picture. This may or may not be to your liking.
So what does one do?
The answer lies in the plethora of other white balance presets such as Cloudy, Shade, Florescent et al. These presets work in an interesting way. While they stand for a certain condition like Shade or Cloudy, they work differently. They try to average out such conditions e.g a Cloudy preset tries to compensate for the bluish tones present in shade and bring in more of warm tone in the picture. A cloudy does the same. Florescent, on the other hand, does the opposite.
The most powerful preset of all is the Custom White Balance preset. It is the most difficult to master as well. To use this preset, you need to select a white or a grey spot in the picture that define the perfect grey and use that as a reference for rest of the colors. Once chosen, the same custom white balance can be used across different images, given that the lighting conditions are the same.
In short, one should remember that role of white balance is to capture colors as the eye sees it. By dialing through the various modes and presets, you can learn what preset suits the conditions and leverage that to capture crisp pictures.

Girl found safe in Ohio after 3 shot dead in Penn. home
QUINCY, Pa. (AP) ? A man in south-central Pennsylvania confronting his wife about custody arrangements for their daughter shot to death three people, then fled with the 4-year-old girl before the two were found about 250 miles away in Ohio, authorities said Saturday.
Kevin Matthew Cleeves was trying to contact his wife Friday to make arrangements to pick up his daughter Leia, but she didn't answer the phone, so he went to a home in Quincy Township, the (Waynesboro) Record-Herald (http://bit.ly/O5EeFX) reported, citing court records.
Police said Cleeves, 35, found a woman and man sitting in a car and began arguing with them, then was ordered to leave. He then shot to death both of them and another woman and took the girl, authorities alleged.
An Amber Alert was issued Friday night but was canceled hours later after the pair were found in Austintown in northeastern Ohio, outside Youngstown.
Cleeves was arrested in the three deaths Friday night in Quincy Township, Pennsylvania state police Trooper Adam Reed. Police had said earlier that Cleeves should be considered "armed and dangerous as well as suicidal." Cleeves was charged with three counts of criminal homicide Saturday, according to court records.
Reed would not give other information about the deaths, including the names of the victims and their relationship to Cleeves, but said more details would be released later Saturday. Court records did not list an attorney for Cleeves.

Baodi | UCI iMedEd International
Friday, July 20 was our last day at the 108 hospital and our last day of our UCI China/Vietnam summer experience.
I will be the first of the three of us to return to the States. Looking back, I can?t help but smile at the incredible opportunity to work with such amazing doctors. Words cannot express the warm, fuzzy feeling I felt in Baodi, in Cangzhou, and in 108. I would like to thank the donors of the Change the World Grant, Dr. Maguire, Mr. Gold, Warren and the iMeded team, all the doctors of Baodi, Cangzhou, Tianjiin Medical University, and 108, Ms. Su, Max, and my family in Vietnam and Japan for an amazing summer.
First I want to reflect a bit on my time in Baodi. Every person I talked to at Tianjin Medical University had no idea where Baodi was. And that is what makes it special. It is considered to be in the countryside. The people in Baodi are so sweet and nice. After only two weeks, our mentors, both the doctors we shadowed and the doctors who work in the education and technology department, became our family.
In Baodi, Xu Lao Shi and Wang Lao Shi arranged our Baodi experience. I had the opportunity to see numerous surgical procedures from an appendectomy to an orthopedic surgery for a broken tibia to a mastectomy to the anastomosis of the radial artery and cephalic vein to Caesarian sections. In the ICU, my mentor patiently taught me about each patient?s condition, how to read their EKGs, and how to interpret their lab values as it relates to respiratory and kidney function. In addition to rotating throughout the hospital, we were taken to secondary/community clinics and village clinics.
The KouDong Community Clinic is much smaller than the Baodi Hospital. There are 26 doctors who work there as well as blah number of beds. The clinic has two floors. The first floor is primary care. The second floor is inpatient. One wing of the clinic is the TCM area where many patients come for acupuncture, cupping, and herbal medicine. It was very interesting to watch the doctors perform acupuncture on a patient who suffered a stroke a couple of weeks ago and then to see later that patient in the rehabilitation room for physical therapy. There is also a separate space for public health services such as vaccinations and patient education, especially for pregnant women. One room in this area that impressed me was the waiting room for the children because in the room was a television that would play public health messages to educate the kids as they wait. One more thing that made an impression on me was paper medical records. The records are now being recorded electronically but the clinic is in the process of transferring all the paper files. Some of the patient files had a very obvious red, blue or green sticker which corresponded to patients with a medical history of diabetes, hypertension, and stroke.
The village clinic in the neighborhood of KouDong serves about 2,000 people. It is a very basic primary care clinic with four rooms: one for the doctor, one therapy room with four chairs and two beds, one for pharmacy, and one small room for the computer. At this clinic, the doctor often makes house calls. It also turns out that this village clinic is connected to the KouDong clinic system. The technology staff at Baodi told us that in five years, they hope to connect all the medical records of all the clinics in the Baodi area. It makes me wonder the possibility of using the iPad once it is connected to the medical records. The doctor could download their patient file, go out and make a house call, record the information, and then return to the clinic to upload the new file to the system.
When we were not working in the hospital or touring the healthcare system, we wandered around China with our mentors. We visited the Tombs of the emperors from the Qing Dynasty, climbed the Great Wall, relaxed in the famous Baodi hotsprings, ate dinner with our mentors and their family, and walked around the town to various parks.
We also had the chance to interact with the public health students from Tianjin Medical Univeristy who had spent a year in Baodi for their rotations. As Eric already mentioned, medical/public school starts right after high school so these students who were second years were 20/21 years old. The three of us were invited to their talent show in which Eric performed as well as the end of the year dinner celebration.
I am very happy to have met such wonderful people in Baodi. I am very thankful for all the meals we shared, all the gan bei, and all the comfortably silent moments I shared with each of them as we were lost in translation. It?s pretty amusing to think about the strong bond we share with our mentors.
After two weeks in Baodi, we moved to Tianjin to visit other clinics and get a glimpse of the healthcare system in a large city setting. On July 5, we were invited to attend the TMU graduation ceremony and as luck would have it, we ran into the dean of Baodi hospital, Wang Yuan Zhang, Xu Lao Shi, and Wang Lao Shi. I will never forget how happy I felt to see them even for a few minutes. Wang Yuan Zhang, who cares greatly for all of his students, told us to keep Saturday night (our last night in China) free so that he can come back with Xu Lao Shi to say goodbye. Keep in mind that Baodi is 2 hours away from Tianjin!
On Saturday night, Wang Yuan Zhang and all of our mentors, Xu Lao Shi, Wang Lao Shi, Zhang Lao Shi, Men Lao Shi, and Chen Lao Shi surprised us in Tianjin! It was such a sweet moment. I will never forget their love and care.

Shark teeth have built-in toothpaste
An in-depth look at shark teeth has found that they contain fluoride, the active ingredient of most toothpaste and dental care mouthwashes.
It helps to explain why sharks are so effective at either tearing or cutting prey. Their teeth are perfectly designed for such tasks, never suffering from cavities, according to the study, recently published in the Journal of Structural Biology.
NEWS: Shark Paradise Found
While shark teeth contain the mineral fluoroapatite (fluorinated calcium phosphate), the teeth of humans and other mammals contain hydroxyapatite, which is an inorganic constituent also found in bone, explained co-author Matthias Epple.
?In order to make teeth more acid resistant, toothpaste often contains fluoride,? Epple, a professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen, told Discovery News. ?In the surface of human teeth after brushing, a small amount ? much less than 1 percent ? of hydroxide is exchanged by fluoride.?
?In contrast,? he added, ?(the surface of) shark teeth contains 100 percent fluoride. In principle, sharks should not suffer from caries. As they live in water and as they change their teeth regularly, dental protection should not be a problem for sharks.?

For the study, Epple and colleagues Joachim Enax, Oleg Prymak and Dierk Raabe used a multitude of high-tech investigative techniques, including scanning electron micrographs, to look at the teeth of two different sharks: the shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) and the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). These sharks were chosen because of their different eating habits. Shortfin makos tear the flesh of prey, while tiger sharks cut flesh.
Despite these differences, the teeth of the both sharks were found to have a similar chemical and crystalline composition. In addition to the highly mineralized enamel exterior, the interior of shark teeth was determined to contain a soft material known as ?dentin,? which contains more protein and is more elastic. Human teeth also have dentin.
Mechanical measurements and tests on the micro and nano-scales determined that shark teeth are not harder than human teeth.
?This finding is surprising, because the mineral fluoroapatite is harder than the mineral hydroxyapatite, so if a tooth were to consist of the mineral alone, a shark tooth would be harder than a human tooth,? Epple said. ?It seems as if the human tooth makes up for the less hard mineral by the special arrangement of the enamel crystals and the protein matrix, and ends up being as hard as a shark tooth.?
He continued that if the teeth of any animal, including humans, were all mineral and super hard, they would be more brittle and prone to shattering. Nature therefore has ways of circumventing this problem, with teeth ?built up from small crystals that are arranged in a special ?architecture? to make them mechanically stronger.? The small amount of protein in teeth, also present in other hard structures like bone and shells, makes these things more elastic.

Andrew Gillis, a Dalhousie University biologist, told Discovery News that the new study ?nicely shows how we can see beautiful evidence of adaptation from the level of whole organs all the way down to the nano scale in the chemical nature and organization of crystals within tooth tissues. This sort of work really addresses, at the most fundamental level, how teeth have evolved to deal with the remarkable stresses that they endure in nature.?
Peter Fratzl, a professor at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, told Discovery News that he was interested to learn that shark teeth are covered with the mineral fluoroapatite.
?It is quite interesting to see that this repeats a very similar and very recent observation about the crayfish mandible, which also turns out to be covered with fluoroapatite although the two species, shark and crayfish, are totally unrelated, but both living under water.?
Fratzl said it?s possible that fluoroapatite coatings are much less water soluble than hydroxyapatite and are therefore ?more stable in water and more resistant against bacterial attack.?
In addition to the unique structure of their teeth, sharks also have the handy ability to replace their teeth several times during their lives. This is not due to cavities, but rather because their teeth sometimes wind up stuck in prey or are otherwise forced out.

Project Holodeck and Oculus Rift hope to kickstart every gamers' VR dream for $500 (video)
Star Trek: The Next Generation may be coming to your living rooms soon courtesy of some hot new Blu-ray pressing, but one of the most compelling pieces of the technology shown on that series still remains elusive: the holodeck. Don't get down, sunshine, because we might soon be making our first, tentative steps into a virtual courtesy of Project Holodeck. It's underway at USC's School of Cinematic Arts as well as the Viterbi School of Engineering and starts out with a pair of Project Oculus glasses. These glasses, which were shown off at E3 by none other than John Carmack, cram a 1,280 x 800 display into a pair of glasses that present a wide, truly immersive field of view. Pair that with a PlayStation Move for head tracking and a Razer Hydra controller and you have the beginnings of a proper virtual reality environment.
An early concept of what the complete system might feel like can be found after the break, a couple of people acting out a sequence from Skies of Arcadia, which could be called a spiritual inspiration for the first game designed for Project Holodeck: Wild Skies. In it, two people "pilot a massive airship through a exotic world of floating islands" -- though whether they look as kawaii as their Dreamcast predecessors remains to be seen. When you might actually get your hands on the system is also unknown, but one piece of the puzzle, the Oculus Rift glasses, are said to be hitting Kickstarter any day now -- for an anticipated price of just $500. Stock markets across the world plunge on the news of an increasingly severe debt dilemma in the Euro Zone. In the meantime smart investors can look for ways to profit from a global stock selloff. United States and European stocks fell on news of increased borrowing costs in Spain. Investors fear that one more nation in the Euro Zone may need a costly bailout. The concern is one of contagion. As the European economy suffers so do exports from China, trade with North America, and Euro-derived funds for investment throughout much of Asia. Using the so called blood in the streets analogy it may well be time to profit from a global stock selloff while depression rules the markets. This sort of strategy would be similar to a decision to invest in European junk bonds or Chinese real estate after their market collapses. To profit from a global stock selloff the investor needs to have a good sense of when the market has hit bottom and a good sense of which stocks will then have big upside potential.
When and Where Will the Market Bottom Out?
To profit from a global stock selloff an investor will need to go back to the basics. Fundamental analysis will help him decide just how low a give stock will fall. Technical analysis will help him spot a turnaround in market sentiment in order to most accurately enter the market near the bottom. The decision will not begin with picking a given stock but rather with picking a market. Has Japan already bottomed out due to the effects of the tsunami? When will China hit its low point in exports? Will overlooked stocks in the Euro Zone prosper in the long run with a weaker Euro? To profit from a global stock selloff one still needs to look at individual markets and then at individual stocks in search of the best opportunities.
A Close or Distant Time Horizon
When will an investment in a weakened stock turn to profits? To profit from a global stock selloff one needs to pick the most promising stock at the bottom of the market. The most promising stock may be one that is likely to rebound in weeks or months based upon changes in market sentiment. Or the best stock to profit from a global stock selloff may be a stock with very long term growth potential. Long term growth potential may well be the case with Europe. The likely solution to the debt dilemma will be for the Euro Zone to spend its way out. This will likely cause a substantial devaluation of the Euro. That same devaluation will make European products more competitive than they have been for years if not decades. A weakened Euro may well lead to stronger Euro Zone companies, more competitive products, surging Euro Zone stocks. Self-care is key for our spiritual, emotional and physical health. You probably partake in a variety of nourishing habits every day ? from the bare essentials of taking a shower and brushing your teeth to getting enough sleep, exercising and meditating.

In his book Emotional Fitness for Couples, psychotherapist Barton Goldsmith, Ph.D, shares simple ways couples can stay in shape and become closer and stronger every day.
Here are eight ideas from his helpful book.
1. Create a special, secret way to say ?I love you.?
According to Goldsmith, saying ?I love you? creates a safe and secure space. Think about how you can make this a unique ritual. In the book he features an example of a happily married couple who texts each other ?111? and ?111-2? to signify ?I love you.?
2. Engage in random acts of love.
Goldsmith suggests each partner make a list of loving acts you?d like the other to perform, such as a backrub or breakfast in bed. Exchange your lists, and aim to do something from your partner?s list once a week.
3. Go to bed together.
?Sleeping together is one of the most important parts of a relationship,? Goldsmith writes. Even if you have different schedules, this can be done. Goldsmith gives an example of a couple who always go to bed together, even though she goes to bed at 8:30 p.m. and he gets his best ideas at night. They lay together until she falls asleep. Then he reads, writes or gets up and watches TV. Goldsmith suggests creating a bedtime routine, which might include anything from reading from a fave book together to snuggling while watching TV.
4. Do romantic deeds.
?If you want to express your romantic feelings to someone you love, do something, anything, rather than nothing,? Goldsmith writes. Romance doesn?t need to be a grand getaway. Again, small totally counts. For instance, he explains that one flower tends to have the same effect as a bouquet. He suggests talking to each other about what you find romantic and creating a romance ?wish list,? which you can exchange.
5. Make yourself happy.
Partners are not responsible for each other?s happiness. As Goldsmith says, ?Happiness is an inside job.? Thinking otherwise can chip away at your relationship. One way to be happier is to keep a gratitude journal. Goldsmith suggests jotting down five things you?re grateful for every night and reading it in the morning. If you?re not sure what makes you happy, ask your partner. They usually notice what contributes to your joy.
6. Take time for yourself.
A healthy relationship isn?t all-consuming, either. It shouldn?t make up your entire life, Goldsmith says. He suggests spending time alone to rediscover yourself ? taking solo trips, for instance ? and recording your own goals, desires and plans.
7. Chat about change.
Change is inevitable. Our lives change. We change. Our relationships change. Goldsmith suggests talking with your partner about how you?d like to deal with change so you?re better prepared. For instance, you might discuss what to do if one of you loses your job, he says.
8. Spend a few minutes connecting.
Goldsmith suggests the following exercise to cultivate a deeper connection, which takes just a few minutes: Hold each other?s hands, look into each other?s eyes and remember what you love about each other.? He also suggests doing this before having important conversations.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Dark Knight Rises" was on track to earn $160 million, which would be a record for 2-D films, over the weekend following a mass shooting at a Colorado screening of the Batman film.
Citing box office insiders, The Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles Times, New York Times and other media outlets reported Sunday that the latest Batman sequel earned $160 million to $162 million.
That amount would best the $158.4 million debut of "The Dark Knight" in 2008 and give "Dark Knight Rises" the third-highest domestic weekend opening ever, after the 3-D films "The Avengers" with $207.4 million and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ? Part 2" with $169.2 million.
The Hollywood Reporter also cited box office sources who said "Dark Knight Rises" earned $70 million from nine of the 17 countries where it debuted over the weekend, including the United Kingdom, Australia, South Korea and Spain.
Tickets for 3-D films cost a few more dollars than 2-D screenings, netting extra cash at the box office. Movies released in 3-D typically earn under half of their income in 3-D screenings, sometimes as little as a third.
Sony, Fox, Disney, Paramount, Universal and Lionsgate joined "Dark Knight Rises" distributor Warner Bros in publicly withholding their usual revenue reports out of respect for the victims of the deadly shooting early Friday and their families.
Box-office tracking service Rentrak also did not report figures following the Aurora, Colo., shootings that killed 12 and injured 58 at a midnight screening of the new Batman sequel on Friday.
"This tragedy did not seem to impact the box office in a major way," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for Hollywood.com who specializes in box office. "For this film to still be in the rarified air of the top-three openings of all time is phenomenal, given the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the release of this film."
Dergarabedian noted that the box-office ranking of director Christopher Nolan's final installment of his Batman trilogy would not be official until Warner Bros. and other studios release their final weekend box-office tallies Monday.
Anne Hathaway, who plays Catwoman in the film, became the third member of "The Dark Knight Rises" cast and crew to express her condolences after arriving home in the United States from Paris, where Warner Bros. quickly canceled a premiere Friday night.
"My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomable senseless act," the actress said in a statement. "I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."

Cell research opens new avenues in combating neurodegenerative diseases
ScienceDaily (July 20, 2012) ? Scientists at the University of Manchester have uncovered how the internal mechanisms in nerve cells wire the brain. The findings open up new avenues in the investigation of neurodegenerative diseases by analysing the cellular processes underlying these conditions.
Dr Andreas Prokop and his team at the Faculty of Life Sciences have been studying the growth of axons, the thin cable-like extensions of nerve cells that wire the brain. If axons don't develop properly this can lead to birth disorders, mental and physical impairments and the gradual decay of brain capacity during aging.
Axon growth is directed by the hand shaped growth cone which sits in the tip of the axon. It is well documented how growth cones perceive signals from the outside to follow pathways to specific targets, but very little is known about the internal machinery that dictates their behaviour.
Dr Prokop has been studying the key driver of growth cone movements, the cytoskeleton. The cytoskeleton helps to maintain a cell's shape and is made up of the protein filaments, actin and microtubules. Microtubules are the key driving force of axon growth whilst actin helps to regulate the direction the axon grows.
Dr Prokop and his team used fruit flies to analyse how actin and microtubule proteins combine in the cytoskeleton to coordinate axon growth. They focussed on the multifunctional proteins called spectraplakins which are essential for axonal growth and have known roles in neurodegeneration and wound healing of the skin.
What the team demonstrate in this recent paper is that spectraplakins link microtubules to actin to help them extend in the direction the axon is growing. If this link is missing then microtubule networks show disorganised criss-crossed arrangements instead of parallel bundles and axon growth is hampered.
By understanding the molecular detail of these interactions the team made a second important finding. Spectraplakins collect not only at the tip of microtubules but also along the shaft, which helps to stabilise them and ensure they act as a stable structure within the axon.
This additional function of spectraplakins relates them to a class of microtubule-binding proteins including Tau. Tau is an important player in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, which is still little understood. In support of the author's findings, another publication has just shown that the human spectraplakin, Dystonin, causes neurodegeneration when affected in its linkage to microtubules.
Talking about his research Dr Prokop said: "Understanding cytoskeletal machinery at the cell level is a holy grail of current cell research that will have powerful clinical applications. Thus, cytoskeleton is crucially involved in virtually all aspects of a cell's life, including cell shape changes, cell division, cell movement, contacts and signalling between cells, and dynamic transport events within cells. Accordingly, the cytoskeleton lies at the root of many brain disorders. Therefore, deciphering the principles of cytoskeletal machinery during the fundamental process of axon growth will essentially help research into the causes of a broad spectrum of diseases. Spectraplakins like at the heart of this machinery and our research opens up new avenues for its investigation"
What Dr Prokop's paper in the Journal of Neuroscience also demonstrates is the successful research technique using the fruit fly Drosophila. The team was able to replicate its findings regarding axon growth in mice which in turn means the findings can be translated to humans.
Dr Prokop points out fruit flies provide ideal means to make sense of these findings and essentially help to unravel the many mysteries of neurodegeneration.
Dr Prokop continues: "Understanding how spectraplakins perform their cellular functions has important implications for basic as well as biomedical research. Thus, besides their roles during axon growth, spectraplakins of mice and humans are clinically important for a number of conditions and processes including skin blistering, neuro-degeneration, wound healing, synapse formation and neuron migration during brain development. Understanding spectraplakins in one biological process will instruct research on the other clinically relevant roles of these proteins."
The recently published paper represents six years of work by Dr Prokop and his dedicated team.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? The man in charge of Asian soccer, once a candidate to oust FIFA President Sepp Blatter as the sport's worldwide leader, enriched himself and handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars to friends and relatives, according to an audit obtained by The Associated Press.
Mohamed bin Hammam, a 63-year-old Qatari whose life ban from football was overturned in a sports court earlier this week, is accused of using the Asian Football Confederation bank accounts to conduct his private affairs.
The audit was prepared by the international accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers and dated July 13. A copy of the report was obtained by the AP; its contents were confirmed by two people with direct knowledge of the report who spoke on condition of anonymity because it hasn't been made public.
The report offered rare details of the usually secretive accounts of not-for-profit football bodies handling hundreds of millions of dollars. And it portrayed a man who was running Asian soccer like a family business, negotiating contracts on his own and mingling his personal and AFC bank accounts.
The audit was especially critical of bin Hammam's use of AFC accounts for personal expenses, although there was no evidence of direct payments to bin Hammam.
"It is highly unusual for funds (especially in the amounts detailed here) that appear to be for the benefit of Mr. Hammam personally, to be deposited to an organization's bank account," the audit said.
He received millions of dollars from individuals linked to AFC contracts, according to the audit, and spent tens of thousands of dollars on items like a honeymoon for his son and dental work, haircuts and cash payments for his family.
It found he spent $700,000 from AFC coffers on himself and his family, including $100,000 for his wife, $10,000 on a Bulgari watch for himself and nearly $5,000 for his daughter's cosmetic dentistry.
Payments were also made to Asian, African and Caribbean football officials, including $250,000 to Jack Warner, the longtime strongman of Caribbean football.
"The arrangement with Mr Hammam's use of the sundry debtors account is, in our view, highly unusual and reflects poor governance," the audit said. "This use by Mr Hammam of the sundry debtors account continued even after the external auditor's recommended that it be stopped. Our review indicates that it was common belief that this account was for Mr Hammam personally and all funds flowing through it were his personal monies.
"We question why Mr Hammam would conduct his personal financial transactions through the AFC's bank accounts when the documents we have seen indicate that he already has several personal bank accounts in various countries," the audit said.
The Asian governing body, which he has led since 2002 was advised to seek "legal advice in respect of ... whether the actions of Mr. Hammam, and other parties identified in this report, constitute criminal and/or civil breaches." Bin Hammam was suspended for 30 days by the AFC following receipt of the report last week.
Bin Hammam was not available for comment. His United States lawyer said the allegations were a FIFA tactic to block his return to world football.
"If there were ever any question about the political motives behind FIFA's vendetta against Mr. Bin Hammam, it has been answered by the outrageous and baseless new charges that FIFA and AFC are bringing against him," lawyer Eugene Gulland said in a statement.
The audit found that a contract for commercial rights with World Sports Group and its subsidiary World Sports Football were no-bid contracts that were "considerably undervalued." A $14 million payment from companies with stakes in WSG, Al Baraka Investment and Development Co. and International Sports Events Company, was made to the AFC for the "personal use of its president," the report said.
Bin Hammam also approved several lucrative, no-bid contracts for commercial rights, including one for Qatari-owned Al-Jazeera Satellite Network.
The audit said its review of the AFC accounts found that it routinely handed out tens of thousands of dollars in cash to federation presidents and their relatives. Most of it went to their personal bank accounts and none of it was for football related expenses, it said.
Gaurav Thapa, whose father heads the Nepalese federation, received $100,000 while a Filipino football official Jose Mari Martinez received $60,000 and had $11,226 in hospital expenses paid. Another $50,000 went to an East Timorese football official Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, the audit found.
Another $25,000 went for tuition expenses for a Bangladesh football federation spokesman and $20,000 to cover the cost of cancer treatment for the federation's general secretary.
Also, nearly $2,000 was spent by Bin Hammam to buy 14 shirts for Blatter and nearly $5,000 went toward the purchase of suits for Issa Hayatou, the CAF president.
The acting head of the AFC called for an end to spending abuses.
