AP: Review says Sandusky fits sex predator status

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky has been recommended for designation as a sexually violent predator, a legal status that would require lifetime registration with authorities, according to a person who has read an assessment board's report to a judge in the case.

The recommendation from the Sexual Offenders Assessment Board was disclosed to The Associated Press on Thursday by the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the report's confidential nature.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. He is jailed awaiting sentencing and maintains his innocence.

Sandusky, given his age and the serious nature of the crimes of which he was convicted, is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life. No sentencing date has been announced.

Pennsylvania law designates certain offenders as sexually violent predators if they are considered to have mental abnormalities or personality disorders that make them likely to engage in predatory sexually violent offenses.

If prosecutors pursue the sexually violent predator status and Sandusky opposes it, Judge John Cleland will decide whether it is merited.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office declined to comment on Thursday, and Sandusky defense attorney Joe Amendola did not return phone and email messages seeking comment.

Sexual Offenders Assessment Board spokesman Leo Dunn said the board does not comment on any case, but he noted it has never failed to complete an assessment within 90 days, as required. The judge ordered Sandusky's evaluation by the board on June 22, shortly after the jury verdict.

Dunn said such evaluations are assigned to an investigator, who then reports his or her findings to a board member. The board member produces an evaluation, which includes a recommendation.

Some sex offenders must register under the Pennsylvania Megan's Law for 10 years, but that requirement is lifelong for sexually violent predators, who must update their residences to the state police on a quarterly basis and prove they are participating in approved counseling.

Also, the chief law enforcement official in the community where a sexually violent predator lives is required to notify the public by producing a flier that bears the offender's name, address, photograph and offense.

Eight young men testified against Sandusky, describing a range of abuse that went from grooming and manipulation to fondling, oral sex and anal rape when they were boys and included acts that occurred inside Penn State team showers.

One young man testified his muffled screams from the basement of the Sandusky home in State College, where Penn State is based, went unanswered as Sandusky attacked him.

"He got real aggressive and just forced me into it," the 18-year-old testified. "And I just went with it ? there was no fighting against it."

Prosecutors said Sandusky used his status as a Penn State football icon and the charity for youth he founded, The Second Mile, to attract victims. He was arrested in November after a grand jury investigation that also led to charges of perjury and failure to report suspected abuse against university administrators Tim Curley and Gary Schultz. Those charges, which the men deny, have not gone to trial.

Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno was fired by the university's board of trustees days after Sandusky's arrest, and the scandal also cost university president Graham Spanier his job. Paterno died of lung cancer in January, while Spanier, who has not been charged with any crime, remains a tenured faculty member.

The Importance of Branding Your Business - Medical Travel Club

Make your business a cash cow by using effective branding strategies. The idea of branding often brings to mind marks made on livestock for identification. Branding makes people identify your business. With a few stellar tips on branding your business, you?ll stand out from the competition.

What is Branding?

Business branding is a way to make people recognize your business. When you pass a certain restaurant, the familiar sign immediately makes you feel hungry. You might decide to turn into the entrance to get something to eat. The restaurant successfully attracted a customer. How did they do it?

A logo makes people notice you. Colors, pictures, shapes and an array of unusual ideas are used to brand a business. A combination of elements creates a symbol people relate to. They see it and want it because they know it. The right branding techniques makes it happen for your business.

How Do You Brand Your Business?

Various marketing techniques are used to brand businesses. Often a logo is created to use on business advertisements, promotional materials, letterhead and billing statements. Another way to brand your business is with a slogan or catch phrase.

Go back to that restaurant along the road. You saw the sign and thought about food. Suddenly you felt hungry. Did you remember a certain promotional phrase or website image? Whether it referred to a particular type of food or just an upbeat statement, it created an alluring environment. You entered the restaurant and made a purchase. It was a delicious meal and the restaurant earned a profit.

You can agonize for hours trying to do it yourself or hire a branding pro with the resources to develop an enticing marketing campaign. The end result is more profits and better word-of-mouth about your business.

Branding Creates a Mutually Beneficial Experience

The right branding techniques help to create a mutually beneficial experience. You want to attract people who need what your business offers. Duping potential customers might attract attention but negates your credibility. Who wants to buy from a joker?

Delivering a clear message keeps customers happy. They know what to expect and come to your business to get it. They recognize your logo and think of your reliability when they have a need. If someone asks for what you offer, they remember your business and recommend it. Your logo or website might even be what they share for a future customer to find you.

When people want what you have, they buy it and come back to buy again. This creates a mutually beneficial experience. Customers depend on your business and you profit. Professional branding services help create this advantageous environment.

Google Maps updated to v6.11.1, runs short on changelog information

Google Maps

The latest Google Maps update has now appeared in the Google Play Store and shows the app has been bumped up to v6.11.1. After the last update, many HTC Rezound users had issues and were forced to downgrade to an earlier version so this might be a fix for that given Google hasn't really posted a changelog for it as of yet. In fact, it looks like they simply reworded the last one:

  • See borders of cities, postal codes, and more highlighted on search.
  • Browse a day-by-day display of where you've been using location history.
  • Improved transit information layer and added the ability to browse by mode of transportation.

If you happened to have any issues with the older build, go ahead and give this one a shot and see if there is any changes. We'll keep an eye on the changelog and see if Google adjusts it in anyway and update if necessary.

MLB, ESPN extend television contract

NEW YORK (AP) ? Major League Baseball and ESPN extended their television contract through 2021 on Tuesday, a deal that almost doubles the amount of money the network will pay annually for baseball content while also all but eliminating local blackouts for ESPN games on Monday and Wednesday nights.

The deal was announced on Tuesday. It combines rights for TV, radio, digital and international that had been separate. The new single contract adds new rights to air a wild-card game, along with additional rights to highlights and digital content. It also gives the network more flexibility to show games involving popular teams.

The previous contracts were worth close to $360 million a year combined. A person with knowledge of the new combined deal says it will be worth about $700 million a year over eight years. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the financial figures were not released.

"ESPN's financial commitment to baseball is extraordinary. ... It's a testament to not only the strength of our game, but the unprecedented popularity with our fans," Commissioner Bud Selig said.

The deal also addresses a long-running problem for ESPN, which was prevented from broadcasting games in the local markets of the teams involved in the game that night. For instance, if ESPN was carrying a Wednesday night game between the Dodgers and Giants, it was unable to show that game in the Los Angeles and San Francisco metro areas.

The new agreement, which begins in 2014, allows ESPN to increase the number of "coexists," meaning that a game between the Dodgers and Giants can be broadcast on the local television stations in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and ESPN.

"We're ESPN. We promote the game all day, we take 'Baseball Tonight' to the area and then when the game starts, there's a message that says 'Not carried in your area,'" ESPN President John Skipper said. "We are now out of that business. The coexist is very important to us."

ESPN still carries exclusive rights for Sunday night games, but Selig said he was pleased with the increased availability of all the games both locally and nationally during the work week.

"I think this deal is very fair," Selig said. "Given the number of games that we have, we certainly don't want to hurt any local rights holders. I don't think we have here at all. The clubs, on balance, are all going to be remarkably better off."

The deal also gives ESPN the rights to a wild-card game, which will rotate between the AL and NL every other year, the ability to air live look-ins on "SportsCenter" and increased the number of times it can schedule a team on Sunday night baseball from five to six.

So does that mean yet another installment of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry on ESPN? Not necessarily, Skipper said. He said he knows the network is criticized for the perception that it schedules too many games from that series and said ESPN has committed to put every team in the league in that slot at least once per season.

"We want to have a balance to maximize the teams that are most popular and drive the most ratings, but we also want to work with baseball to feature every team and help grow the game," Skipper said.

Weekly Writing Challenge: Sound of Blogging ? Emotfit's Blog

WHY THIS:

This week the theme is sound.? This post is about my hearing loss and the dependence om the internet to keep up a contact with the world. ?Word Press has been part of that. ?As some of you know, I have a Cranky Old Lady ?inside my Pollyanna self. ?Cranky Old Lady part has just issued her new social media policy. Be forewarned.

Image by me and protected. Use it freely, but give me credit.

?Communication is response? claims?anthropologist? Gregory Bateson. ?Social networking is response. ?Hence my new policy. ?Back to becoming deaf.

In the year 2002, I was at a children?s party at the Family Support Program I over saw then as the Director of a Mental Health Program. ?The party was ending, and as I stood up to leave, my right ear shut down. Sounds from the outside world were replaced by a strange buzzing sound ? As I had a cold, I shrugged it off. Major mistake.

Turns out I had been hit with a virus that causes?sudden hearing loss.? The link calls the sudden loss of hearing ?a major emergency, but it was three weeks before I decided it was more than a blocked ear because of a cold. ? By the time I visited my doctor it was too late to reverse things. ?If you get help earlier enough, the hearing loss can often be reversed.?Stoicism is not always wise.

Also the visit revealed, ?I had a substantial hearing loss in my left ear. ?Good news: that loss could be helped by a hearing aid. ?Twenty-five hundred dollars later, I had about 85% of the ?hearing restored to my left ear.

Since then as my hearing continues to diminish, I have had to replace my hearing aid twice. ?The first replacement was because hearing aids only last two or three years. ?Planned obsolescence? I wonder. ?Scary to think I only have two years left on my current aid for I live on a limited income.

The second replacement was because I lost one and the insurance no longer covered loss. ?Hearing aids today are small little things and if you are very careful, they appear to come alive and engage you in a game of hide and seek.

Moreover, I am ADD and extremely distractable;?I do not always put my aid where it will be safe and not able to run and play. ? ?I am sure I lost this one at the local Y after swimming. ?A review of their lost and found produced seven hearing aids. ?Not one was mine, but at least I knew I was not alone in the world of those dolts who lose hearing aids.

Almost had a heart attack six months ago, when while changing clothes,?I put my hearing aid down on my bed side table. ?When I went to put it back in, the thing had vanished. I panicked, but I soon discovered it in Punky the Pup?s mouth.

Some of you know the Punk.

For those of you who don?t, Punky is a Schnokie?meaning a ?Schnauzer?and Yorkie mix. ?We rescued him. His name when rescued was Pumpkin, not fitting at all. ?He is almost as oppositional and unwilling to obey as my beloved husband David. ?So Pumpkin became Punky.

Cute isn?t he? And he is charming. Cute and charming is why you stay in love with Punks.

Anyway, the Punk had discovered ?my hearing aid as it was resting on my bed side table, and carried it away to chump on. ?He was hiding when I started looking for it and that is why I decide to look in his mouth. He chews?on a multitude of things, and hides when he knows he has found a treat not meant for him.

The powers that be were with me, however, as he only chewed the part that went in my ear; replacing that only cost sixty bucks. ?According to people at the hearing aid center, ?happens often enough that they were not surprised. ?Nice not to be alone in my goof-ups.

Another almost heart attack came two ?months ago when I suddenly realized I was not wearing my hearing aid. ?Nor did I remember taking it out. Nor was it in the little cases I am supposed to stow it in for safety?s sake. ?Nor was it hanging on the hook I use when at my desk. ?(I ?take it off briefly to use the phone or put on a headset to better hear something on my?computer.

Not finding it, ? I decided it might have fallen out when I was walking the dog. ?So David and I with flash light in hand, it was night-time, spent an hour re-tracing those steps. ?We then headed to the local Safeway to see if it had ?dropped there.

Small blessing: the cashier who had waited on me three hours earlier was still at work; she remembered seeing it in my ear. ?That narrowed the search time, still David insisted we look at all the shopping carts which we did to no avail. ?We went out to canvas the parking lot once again no luck there. I crank about life with my Grumpy Old Man, but when I really need support he is there and this was one of the times I remembered why we married and have stayed married.

After ?a bad night?s sleep, I was at my desk, sniffing and holding back tears, while wondering where the money was going to come for a new one and thinking about just giving into being deaf. Then among the papers I was mindlessly shuffling around, there it was. my runaway hearing aid.

Grateful, but also shamed. Shame is a useless whirl pool that waits to suck us down when the stuff of life batters us just a bit too hard. But, life goes on. Life may go on but ?for now my blogging is ended.

Feeling glad to have made light ?of and gotten a post from past painful events. ?Hope I haven?t bored you.?Someone said somewhere something like, ?If you can laugh afterward, why not laugh then??

Ha. We just don?t work that way, or I don?t. ? More over I have made light, but have also been pulled back a bit to the very real pains involved in growing both old and deaf.

To lift my spirits will post this and go do something else I like, eating a bar of chocolate? ? Play ball with the Punk, watch a funny YouTube, Remember what matters? ?Those are some of my Emotional Fitness Training Exercises. ?The work most of the time in most situations. ?Thank you for reading. ?Practicing Gratitude is another of my Daily Exercises. ?I need to say I am getting a bit tearful and grateful for the connections blogging has added to my life. ?Thank you Word Press. Thank you all.

PRACTICE KINDNESS

If you know someone who might feel less alone or come to a better understanding of old deaf people, share this post. ?Three people will benefit. ?The person you share with, you and me. Sharing is caring, caring is kindness, and ?kindness circles back.

Thank you.

Katherine

But what is most important is that waste is dealt with in the rightful manner to avoid destruction in the state of the environment.
