Nearly half of Yemenis go hungry post-revolt, says WFP

SANAA (Reuters) - Nearly half of Yemenis go to bed hungry every night as political instability compounds a global food and fuel price surge, giving the Arabian Peninsula state the world's third-highest rate of child malnutrition, the World Food Programme said on Sunday.

Yemen has been in turmoil since last year's revolt against 33 years of rule by Ali Abdullah Saleh when already weak state control in outlying regions broke down as the army split into pro- and anti-Saleh factions and al Qaeda militants occupied some areas.

Forced to import most of its food needs because of a paucity of arable land, Yemen has also suffered from a rise in global food and fuel prices, WFP spokesman Barry Came told Reuters.

"Five million people, or 22 percent of the population, can't feed themselves or buy enough to feed themselves ... These are mostly landless laborers, so they don't grow their own food, and with high food prices they can't buy it either," said Came.

"In addition, there is another five million who are being really hard hit by high food prices and on the edge of being food insecure. So 10 million people in this country go to bed hungry every night."

The number of people receiving daily WFP food rations has risen from 1.2 million in January to over 3.8 million, but poor infrastructure and fear of kidnappings by tribes have complicated the logistics of providing food aid.

"They are really hit by fuel and food price rises ... but there's also political instability, conflict, terrorist activity and huge population displacement," he said. "Without political security and stability you can't solve the problem."

MALNOURISHED

Thirteen percent of Yemeni children were now acutely malnourished as a result of the political and economic strains of the past year, giving Yemen the third-highest rate of child malnutrition in the world, he said.

Saleh was forced to stand down in February after over 2,000 people died. Came said there were now 500,000 internally displaced Yemenis after the fight with militants in the south and Saleh's 2009/10 war against Shi'ite Islamists known as Houthis north of Sanaa.

International donors pledged $1.46 billion in aid to the country of 24 million at a meeting in New York on Thursday attended by President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who said the pledge would help Yemen avoid a civil war.

Donors, who include permanent U.N. Security Council members China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States, as well as Gulf Arab states, had already promised $6.4 billion but will expect more action on political and security reform in return.

Restoring stability has become an international priority for fear Islamist militants will further entrench themselves in a country neighboring top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and lying on major world shipping lanes.

Central government also faces a campaign of suicide attacks and assassinations by militants in revenge for army operations and U.S. missile strikes against them. (Writing by Andrew Hammond; Editing by Sophie Hares)

Improved medicine, awareness and activism have decreased breast cancer's impact

Though much of the activism surrounding breast cancer may be a relatively recent phenomenon, people have struggled with the disease for thousands of years.

In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, the oldest known written record of any cancer ? found in a 4,000-year-old Egyptian surgery textbook ? describes eight instances of tumors affecting women?s breasts. Called the Edwin Smith Papyrus, the document describes how to remove tumors using a procedure similar to cauterization with a device known as a ?fire-drill.?

It ends on a grim note, saying ?there is no treatment? for the disease.

Yet even though it has been a known condition since ancient times, breast cancer remained uncommon until the 19th century.

It?s not because people were any healthier before that; on the contrary, most people simply died too young to develop cancer. But the 1800s saw advances in sanitation and medicine that resulted in dramatic increases in lifespan.

Today, breast cancer is the most common cancer afflicting women, with about 1 in 8 women being affected during their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Though on the decline, breast cancer death rates in women are higher than the rates for any other type of cancer, except lung cancer.

And although breast cancer most commonly appears in women, the disease can strike men as well ? in 2011, more than 2,000 men were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Thomas Marsland is a medical oncologist, currently practicing in Orange Park. He has practiced for about 30 years around the North Florida region and described the advancements he?s witnessed in the treatment of breast cancer as ?amazing.?

?When I first started in practice back in the early ?80s, we had maybe half a dozen drugs that we used to treat breast cancer,? said Marsland. ?And for a woman with advanced breast cancer, if she lived a couple of years, she was doing well.?

That?s no longer the case, he said.

Marsland said that between advances in the drugs used to treat breast cancer over the past few decades and the increased knowledge physicians have about the disease, cure rates have improved by as much as 60 percent, particularly when the disease is treated aggressively at an early stage.

?I think there?s been a great deal of progress,? said Marsland. ?We still have some work to do, women are still dying with breast cancer. Even though there?s been significant improvement, we have a ways to go.?

Marsland also said that research has improved the tolerability of many chemotherapy medications and that doctors have learned a lot about controlling unpleasant side effects.

He expressed optimism about future treatments for the disease, particularly those based around an individual molecular analysis of each patient?s cancer. Marsland noted that one thing doctors have learned over the past several decades is that not all breast cancer is created equal.

?What we?re moving into is an era of molecular and biological definitions of cancers,? he said. ?And they?ve now identified as many as 70 to 100 genes seen in breast cancer.?

He also described advancements in surgical treatments and noted that the field has moved past the days of radical mastectomies, wherein the entire affected breast would be removed. There are still cases that require mastectomy, but Marsland said cure rates with less invasive procedures have improved to be on par with mastectomies.

Marsland, who has volunteered with the American Cancer Society for a number of years, also gives credit to the increased activism and awareness efforts surrounding breast cancer over the past few years. He stressed the importance of early detection in fighting breast cancer and praised the work of awareness groups, such as the ACS and Susan G. Komen For the Cure, in spreading the message that breast cancer no longer has to be a death sentence.

Chandini Portteus, the vice president of research, evaluation and scientific programs for the Komen foundation, expressed similar optimism over how far physicians and the scientific community have come in the treatment of breast cancer.

?In the early 1900s we knew that people had breast cancer, but I don?t think people understood it could spread throughout the body,? said Portteus. ?We now know that when cancer spreads, that?s what really kills people.?

Susan G. Komen For the Cure was founded in 1982, by the sister of the late Susan G. Komen, after she succumbed to breast cancer. Today, the group invests more than $300 million, mostly in bringing research ?from the lab, to the clinic,? as Portteus put it.

She also pointed to the increase in activism and awareness surrounding the disease over the last few decades as a big achievement for those affected.

According to Portteus, with early detection, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer can now be as high as 98 to 99 percent.

But she stresses that early detection remains the key.

?I think we?ve found that teaching women what?s normal for them is a very important thing, said Portteus. ?If you know what normal is and something doesn?t feel normal, see a doctor.?

European Commission set to fine Microsoft over 2009 browser compliance breach

European Commission set to fine Microsoft over 2009 browser compliance breach

The European Commission is planning to fine Microsoft for its failure to adhere to a 2009 ruling that required the software giant to offer customers a choice of default web browser. The EU Competition Commissioner, Joaquin Almuni, advised the press that a formal proceeding into the breach -- which Microsoft itself acknowledges -- has begun. Reuters reports that should Microsoft be found on the wrong side of the law, that the resulting fine could be as much as 10 percent of its global turnover. Whether the end sum would be as high as this remains to be seen, but given recent events, you can expected some hurried shuffling of paper in Redmond's accounts department.

Red king or red queen: In relationships based on mutuality, number of individuals involved can determine rate at which species evolve

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? The relationship between species determines how rapidly they evolve. Parasites and their hosts coevolve more rapidly, and partners in a mutualistic relationship can evolve more slowly. But this view is obviously too simplistic. The rate of evolution in a mutualistic relationship does not depend only on the type of interactions, but also on the number of individuals involved, according to a model developed by researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pl?n, Germany. Therefore, while partners can benefit from slow evolution if only two individuals interact, a higher rate of evolution may be favoured if several individuals are involved.

Parasites and hosts conduct an arms race with one another in which the parasite must constantly find new ways to circumvent the defensive measures of the host. As a result, they both constantly evolve. This is similar to the situation of the Red Queen in the book ?Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There? by British author Lewis Carroll, and is therefore labelled the Red Queen Hypothesis.

The counterpart to it is the Red King?s Hypothesis, first posited in 2003: in mutualistic relationships, evolving more slowly can be favoured. This occurs, namely, when the partners behave egotistically in the beginning and then attempt to become more altruistic. The partner holding back and evolving more slowly benefits, as it does not have to invest anything in improving the partnership.

Up to now, researchers have explored the Red King Hypothesis only in models for which two individuals come into contact with one another. However, this does not reflect reality for the most part. It is much more often the case in nature that several individuals are in a relationship with one another. Thus, several ants protect a single butterfly larva in order to be rewarded with its honeydew. For the ant, the relationship is therefore between two individuals; however, from the perspective of the caterpillar, there are multiple partners interacting.

The scientists in Pl?n have therefore tested the Red King?s Hypothesis in a multiplayer model. According to this, it was confirmed that the Red King?s Hypothesis is only valid in pairwise mutualistic relationships. As soon as several parties are involved, it becomes considerably more complicated. ?Then more rapid evolution can be favoured for a party as well,? explains Chaitanya Gokhale from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology.

New tool for CSI? Geographic software maps distinctive features inside bones

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A common type of geographic mapping software offers a new way to study human remains.

In a recent issue of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, researchers describe how they used commercially available mapping software to identify features inside a human foot bone -- a new way to study human skeletal variation.

David Rose, a Captain in the Ohio State University Police Division and doctoral student in anthropology, began the project to determine whether the patterns of change inside the bones of human remains could reveal how the bones were used during life.

"Our bones adapt to the load that's placed on them. Patterns of tension and compression show up in our internal bone structure, and this software lets us look at those patterns in a new way," Rose said.

Julie Field, study co-author and assistant professor of anthropology at Ohio State, explained that archaeologists frequently use geographic information system (GIS) software to map the location of objects uncovered at an excavation site.

"We try to identify important clusters of objects such as household tools or agricultural tools that would indicate patterns of human activity," Field explained. "Based on certain scientific criteria that you give it, the software gives you a statistical measure of whether the objects you're looking at actually constitute a cluster."

In this case, the researchers used a program called ArcGIS. But similar types of mapping software can analyze any kind of spatial data, such as crime statistics or flood models, Rose added. He usesthe same program to map line-of-site views to develop security plans for events on campus.

This is the first time anyone has used GIS software to map bone microstructure.

Co-author Sam Stout, professor of anthropology at Ohio State and Rose's advisor, explained why the study of internal bone structure is important.

"Dave's work allows us to visualize, analyze, and compare the distribution of microscopic features that reflect the development and maintenance of bones, which we can relate to skeletal health and disease -- for example, bone fragility in osteoporosis," Stout said.

Advances that relate to the study of foot bones in particular would be useful in forensics, Rose explained, because of one grisly fact: when unidentified human remains are discovered today, the foot bones are sometimes intact, having been protected by the deceased person's shoes. Any information about the person, such as age, sex, or body size could ultimately aid law enforcement in identifying a body.

For this study, the researchers studied the cross-section of a metatarsal -- a long bone in the foot -- from a deceased woman who generously gave her body to the Division of Anatomy's Body Donation Program. Using this bone cross-section, they demonstrated how the software could be used to show the loads experienced in the foot during gait.

Rose recorded an extremely high-resolution image of the bone cross-section under a microscope, and used the software to map the location of key structures called osteons.

Osteons are microscopic structures created throughout life to fix small cracks or to maintain mineral levels in our blood. The size and shape of osteons, along with the direction of the collagen fibers from which they are made inside bone, are influenced by the loads we place on our bones during life.

In this case, the donor's metatarsal bone showed the predicted pattern of normal bone remodeling, with concentrations of particular types of osteons along the top and bottom of the bone which could have been formed by forces experienced as she walked -- just where researchers would expect to see telltale signs of foot flexure and compression.

This study provides a proof of concept, Rose cautioned, and many more bones would have to be studied before GIS software could provide meaningful insight into bone biology.

"Really, we're just combining very basic principles in GIS and skeletal biology," he said. "But I believe that there is a tremendous opportunity for advancements at the intersection of both disciplines. The real advantage to this method is that it offers a new scale for the study of human variation offering to shed light on how we adapt to our surroundings."

Co-author Amanda Agnew, assistant professor of anatomy, agreed and added that the work "combines bone biology, biomechanics, and biomedical informatics to explore new methods to evaluate old questions."

Timothy Gocha of the Department of Anthropology also contributed to this research.

Setting limits too low. Business owners who think strategically, plan comprehensively, and execute flawlessly will certainly outpace those who simply set goals and hope for the international business insurance, so you'll get stuck with paying for the international business insurance or broker. In many cases, and for certain businesses such as those with disabilities. When terminating the international business insurance of such employees there is substantial risk of office building damages due to fire, accident, or theft. When looking at home office is lost, consider business interruption insurance.

Energy Business Review: BP and Transocean Get DOJ WRATH, Chesapeake RESUMES At Barclays

BP (NYSE:BP) and Transocean Ltd. (NYSE:RIG) are getting harsher treatment from the Department of Justice since Tuesday regarding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, as it accuses the firms of ?gross negligence? in deciphering a key pressure test. If the allegations are proven in an upcoming trial set for January, the civil damages that BP will have to pay could almost quadruple to $21 billion.

Barclays resumes its coverage of Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) at Equal Weight with a price target of $20, as the firm believes that progress in executing planned asset sales should address most of the worries about liquidity. China warns U.S. not to take sides in sea disputes

JAKARTA/BEIJING (Reuters) - China warned the United States not to get involved in South China Sea territorial disputes on Tuesday as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Beijing pledging to pass on a strong message on the need to calm regional tension.

U.S. officials say Clinton will stress the importance of cooperation and partnership on the visit, an important chance to compare notes during a year of political transition in both countries.

But her visit has been overshadowed by disputes over tiny islets and craggy outcrops in oil- and gas-rich areas of the South and East China Seas that have set China against U.S. regional allies such as the Philippines and Japan.

Clinton arrived in Beijing from Jakarta late on Tuesday, huddling with U.S. officials on board her plane before heading off to meetings with Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi followed by a dinner.

In their brief public remarks, both Clinton and Yang stressed a constructive tone, with Clinton calling the U.S.-China relationship key to the Obama administration's "pivot" to more engagement with the Asia-Pacific.

Despite sometimes bitter commentary in China's state-run media, Yang pledged that Beijing would continue to work with Washington to forge "a new type of major country relationship".

"China stands ready to work with the U.S. side, guided by the joint vision of our two presidents, to further push forward the China-U.S. cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit," Yang said.

But Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei suggested at an earlier news briefing that Washington has not been a helpful force in the maritime disputes, suggesting Clinton may face some push back in Wednesday's talks.

"We have noted that the United States has stated many times that it does not take sides," he said when asked about the U.S. role. "We hope that the United States will abide by its promises and do more that is beneficial to regional peace and stability, and not the opposite."

Chinese newspapers, including Communist Party mouthpiece the People's Daily, have suggested the South China Sea territorial claims are among Beijing's "core national interests" - a term suggesting they share the same importance as sovereignty over Tibet and Xinjiang.

    "WITHOUT COERCION"

Clinton's brief stop in Beijing follows several months of sharpening rhetoric over the maritime disputes, which involve the South China Sea and another string of islets claimed by both China and Japan.

In Jakarta on Monday, Clinton urged China and its Southeast Asian neighbors to move quickly on a code of conduct for the South China Sea and stressed that disputes should be resolved "without coercion, without intimidation, without threats and certainly without the use of force."

But progress has been thwarted by China's increasingly assertive posture, which has included establishing a garrison on a disputed island and stepping up patrols of contested waters.

That suggests Beijing has no intention of backing down on its unilateral claim to sovereignty over a huge stretch of ocean and potentially equally large energy reserves.

Clinton faces a balancing act in Beijing, pushing on the territorial disputes while keeping cooperation on track on other issues including reining in the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs, the Syria crisis and economic disputes that have long bedeviled the two countries.

"One of the challenges before us is to demonstrate how we deal with areas in which we have different perceptions and where we face challenging issues on the ground, or in this case on the water," one senior U.S. official said.

But some Chinese media have been blunt in their opposition to Clinton. The Global Times, a popular, nationalist tabloid, accused her of "deeply intensifying mutual suspicion".

"Many Chinese people dislike Hillary Clinton," it said in an editorial. "She has brought new and extremely profound mutual distrust between the mainstream societies of the two countries, and removing that will not be easy."

    WHAT NEXT?

Clinton will on Wednesday meet outgoing President Hu Jintao and Vice President Xi Jinping, the man who will likely succeed him as paramount leader following a Communist Party congress this year.

Xi visited the United States in February on a get-acquainted tour and U.S. officials expect him to be a steady-handed leader.

But concerns over China's fast-expanding influence and its belligerent tone in the regional disputes have Washington scrambling to assess how Beijing's political stars are lining up even as it ups its own presence in the region.

China, too, has its concerns and has pushed back against U.S. attempts to referee the South China Sea dispute and insert itself into similar rows between China, Japan and South Korea over the islands in the East China Sea.

While Washington has stressed that it takes no position on the competing claims and simply wants to see a mechanism established to resolve them, its forceful calls on China to play along have had a cool reception in Beijing.

Colon Cancer Prevention Guide - Maintain Regularity

If you are concerned about irregularity, you are more likely to get a referral to a psychiatrist than gastroenterologist. Your desire for having regular?stools ? meaning daily, complete, and effortless? ? is actually considered an ?obsessive-compulsive? disorder.

I am not making this up. To protect themselves from malpractice lawsuits, doctors follow the established treatment protocols. These protocols are taught in medical schools, graduated programs, continuous education courses, and prescribed by the leading medical references. The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy is the de facto ?standard of care? reference manual for most Western doctors [link]:

According to Merck, only after not moving bowels for more than three consecutive days, do you become a bona fide ?sicko,? finally entitled for treatment with fiber, laxatives, or both. Soon enough, this farce leads to irreversible bowel disorders, that invariably precede colorectal cancer.

If you indeed ?don't worry about a thing? until the fourth day,? this means that you are already affected by some or all of the following four pathologies:

    (1) Your stools range from type 1 to 3; (2) You already are or will soon become dependent on fiber or laxatives to move your bowels; (3) You are suffering from disbacteriosis, and (4) You may no longer experience urge sensation, essential for regular (daily) defecation.

If you ignore these conditions,? your risk of irreversible bowel disorders and colon cancer increase with the duration of irregularity.

True, in a literal sense, you don't have to have daily stools. In fact, some people go without a bowel movement for weeks at a time simply because the colon has a large holding capacity. But this doesn't mean that it is good, healthy, or normal. It simply means that your colon is no longer sensitive to small amounts of normal stool, and requires more enlarged stools to initiate defecations.

As the pattern of irregularity commences,? first you are moving your bowels every other day, next, it is every second day, next ? every third, and so it goes on all the way to impaction, obstruction, diarrhea, inflammation, polyps, ulcers, lesions, and cancer.

To restore regularity and/or to overcome the loss of urge sensation when it is ?beyond repair,?? review the Restoring Anorectal Sensitivity section, and follow the recommendations in all of the prior steps.

Thai woman taps communications tools to escape with 9 others from ...

Home ? national ? Thai woman taps communications tools to escape with 9 others from Bahrain brothel

    special report

The Nation on Sunday September 2, 2012 1:00 am

From sending SMS messages, googling for websites to contact Thai police and reporters, to using the Google Earth three dimensional programme, Wadi (given name) employed all those tools after realising she had been duped by her friend who sent her a plane e-ticket to Bahrain, saying she could earn Bt50,000 by giving massage service for only 10 days.

Even though she had no experience of massage service, Wadi jumped at the offer, thinking of making a fast buck in an exotic land and as a good change from helping her mother sell groceries at their home. Her friend also sent her an e-mail, which was a letter from the guarantor, a Bahraini man who identified Wadi as his girlfriend who would come to Bahrain to visit him. On August 7, Wadi submitted the letter to the Labour Ministry at Suvarnabhumi Airport and her passage to Bahrain was cleared.

A man holding a sign with her name waited for her at the airport in Manama, Bahrain. She went with him and arrived at a six-floor building that looked like a hotel. She was received by a Thai lady called Jeh Nung, who ushered her into the hotel, saying her friend was waiting upstairs. Her dream turned into a nightmare when she saw nine other Thai women were crammed up in one small room with their personal belongings scattered all over the place. She asked Jeh Nung the whereabouts of her friend but she was dealt a hard blow when the answer was she must have sex with clients or pay Bt100,000 for a plane ticket, food and lodging.

Wadi found out that two out of the nine Thai girls had been similarly duped but seven others had been in the sex trade and some had worked there for more than four years.

They were waiting for the fasting month of Ramadan to get over as clients stopped buying sex during the Muslim holy month.

Wadi thought she had 10 days to figure out how to escape. One day, Jeh Nung brought her and two other women out of the building so that a madam could have a look at them. Wadi took the opportunity to observe and look around the place and saw the name of the building was Farif. She was allowed to buy a phone card but only Bt400 to make local calls. To call Thailand, she had to pay Bt100 per minute.

She connected to an Internet service on her phone and looked up Google for the name of the road and the building she was locked in via the programme Google Earth. She saw that the building was opposite the Embassy of France, and an office of Gulf Air, and Windsor Hotel.

Then she sent SMS messages to Thai police and reporters telling them where she was locked up. Some of them agreed to help and told her to wait while they coordinated with officials.

However, there was no palpable rescue effort while the end of the Ramadan month was approaching. Wadi decided to plan an escape with two others. She told the guard they were going to dump garbage, leaving all their belongings behind to make them believe they would not escape.

When they got out of the room, they went straight inside the lift, came downstairs and sneaked out of the building through a water tank and ran as fast as they could to the main road to catch a taxi to the Thai Embassy.

They arrived at the embassy at 2am but the guard did not permit them to wait inside. However, luck was on their side as the Bahraini taxi driver took pity on them and dropped them off at a hotel and paid for the room - Bt2,000 - telling them not to come out or contact anybody.

They came back to the Thai Embassy in the morning and received help. Police also got the seven others out of the hotel.

Toddlers & Tiaras Contestant Smokes Cigarette on Stage, Sets Positive Example

The parents and youngsters of Toddlers & Tiaras will go to the greatest of lengths to make an impression, as we've seen in hooker outfits and the like over the years.

Four-year-old Destiny smoking is just the newest, crudest example.

Dressed up as Sandy from Grease, she took the stage in a black leather outfit, puffing from a prop cigarette. Now that's sending a positive message!

This makes Here Comes Honey Boo Boo look like wholesome TV.

    Toddlers & Tiaras' Destiny Smoking

At least one judge deducted points on this episode for the use of the prop and the poor message it sends ... which may be the understatement of all time.

One wonders what doesn't qualify for a deduction based on that, but we digress. Tell THG what you think of Destiny puffing on her cigarette below.
