A recently released study by the University of Phoenix looked at the role of teamwork within companies, and the research found that while most workers understand the importance of collaborating with other employees, a significant number have had bad group experiences. For this reason, these employees would now prefer to complete duties and projects alone rather than work on teams.

Of the American workers surveyed, 95 percent stated that teamwork is a vital component of business operations. However, less than a quarter (24 percent) said they would like to collaborate with others in their organizations on upcoming tasks, with the remaining respondents saying they would prefer to work alone. These figures are due to the 68 percent of respondents who stated they have experienced being part of dysfunctional and inefficient teams, notes the research.

Among the poor behaviors these staff members saw during their time working on teams were verbal confrontations between members, workers placing blame on others and false rumors being started by certain co-workers.

Preventing poor teamwork habits
So how can small business owners prevent these types of dysfunctional team situations from occurring? Business 2 Community writes that leaders can develop techniques?aimed at effectively establishing and building supportive behaviors among staff members. These strategies need to focus on bolstering creativity, improving morale and giving employees the chance to get to know other team members.

One idea that could work for companies is to host fun, non-work related functions, both in their office environments and outside of traditional work settings. The source suggests holding trivia games, scavenger hunts, company cookouts and other related activities to foster teambuilding.
