Dog rescued after being found starved, injured in SE New Mexico

A Good Samaritan is praising the help of an Otero County veterinarian after he helped her rescue a severely injured dog back in December.

Esther Farris came across the dog in her field in La Luz and was horrified to see the condition it was in. The dog was curled up, appearing to be severely starved, and was unable to lift its body.

"The dog had been evidently attacked by coyotes," Farris wrote in a statement.

Farris and her cousin, Mike Garcia, were able to rescue the male Labrador/Mastiff mix by placing it on a board and taking it to her home.? After speaking with Jean Schaeffer Animal Rescue Mission, Farris immediately called the Otero County Sheriff's Office for help.

According to Farris, Deputy Charlie Gonzales was shocked by the condition of the dog. In the meantime, Schaeffer called Dr. Christopher Staley, an Alamogordo veterinarian, to report that the dog was in need of emergency attention.

Farris, who named the dog Champ, said he stayed with Dr. Staley almost one week. The veterinarian found that Champ had been hit by a car in the past, according to X-rays. The recent injuries required for Champ's front right leg to be amputated.

According to Farris' statement, Dr. Staley and his staff at Staley's Veterinary Medical Clinic performed the surgery, offered medical care and provided medication for free.? The bill would have totaled nearly $2,000.?

Farris said Champ is healing nicely, gaining weight while his wounds heal. Unfortunately, he walks on his left elbow, which is consistently raw and has to be continuously bandaged. She is publicly praising the staff and Dr. Staley for saving the Champ who was "abused and left to fend for himself against the coyotes and the elements."

Now, Schaeffer and Farris are in search for a good home, full of love and the care that Champ needs. They are also working to raise a grant to receive a prosthetic leg for him.
