ANZ confirms India outsourcing plan | Stuff.co.nz

ANZ has confirmed it is considering transferring 23 back-office roles from Auckland to India.

"At the same time we're looking at what jobs we can bring back this way," a spokesman said.

"These are the only roles we are looking at at the moment."

The move was revealed yesterday by bank workers union, FIRST Union, which said 36 jobs at ANZ's Auckland lending services were going to Bangalore, but 14 staff would be offered new roles.

In Australia ANZ has announced 131 Australian back-office jobs will go to Bangalore, making about 70 staff redundant.

FIRST general secretary Robert Reid said the job losses in both countries were "completely unnecessary, given the profitability the bank is enjoying".

But the ANZ spokesman said the bank routinely deployed skills and responsibilities to parts of the business where they were needed or where there was expertise.

"Some countries have a particular strength when it comes to a particular skill or delivering the best service," the spokesman said.

"It's an on-going process."

Bangalore has become a major branch for the bank's back-office functions.

In 2008 ANZ National, as the bank was then called, sent 500 jobs to India, offered the affected staff new positions.

Its then-chief executive foreshadowed further off-shoring over time because of what he called New Zealand' s high-income workforce.
